    Hello TylerShank,

Thank you for the ban appeal.

Today you have been banned by a Admin for Trolling and Racism.

In the chat log provided I see no racist remarks, but I do see a Admin asking you multiple times to behave.
You did not comply with his request to stop referring the AI as Taliban and got kicked as a warning.
When you came back you told the Admin that he was a 'soyboy' and received a ban.

At this time I will not lift the ban, insulting a Admin is never a good idea.
You can appeal this ban again after the 1st of December 2018.

    Ban appeal denied.

You're the last person that should apologise. I think I speak for everyone when I say that we commend you for your efforts and that you made a damn good staff member.

EU3 is a touchy subject at heart and I could not agree more, honestly, in what you've said about it. As someone with ties back to EU3's very first development thought process and essentially day one play (came second day it came out because lol modpack), I can clearly see how things have changed, for better and indeed for worse.

At the end of the day, EU3 is what it is now, I don't think it's got much a chance of changing, hell, with the amount of work you've managed to sink your heart into I think nothing more could be done. But there is still enjoyment to be had out there. Myself, Jochem and others in hind sight have seen this coming since Gauntlet 33 at least, when EU3 was starting to have its downfall but I cannot stress enough that though EU3 will never be as good as the glory days of Patrol Ops and further on after, there's still good times to be had.

A community is what makes a community run. If I may speak freely, the choice of scrapping the democracy votes is what killed EU3 or at least it's glory days. Now I find that the community has no camaraderie and folks are willing to be spiteful and stab people in the backs to try and climb on the higher ups backs so that they may get what they want when after all, a community is about the want of the many.

Myself and others have tried to do what we could to help but we fear that past reputation leaves us barren from trust.

All in all, EU3 is in no shape or form as fun as it was and it is a damn damn damn shame that players who have joined in the recent year or two could not see the light of what we all had. But, the server still lives on and I'm contempt with that for now.

I think I speak for everyone when I'd get on my knees and beg you to stay but it is indeed your decision and you've done enough

    Copey,

Thank you, best wishes to what you choose to do now and hopefully we'll talk again soon.

    My Resignation.

First let me say this is not a decision I have reached lightly, nor without great turmoil; it has taken me a considerable effort to reach this decision. If you don’t want to read further into this (but I’d suggest you do); the short version is that I am resigning from all AhoyWorld administrative responsibilities with immediate effect.

There have been many great times spent on this server for me, at this point I easily have 1000+ hours of Arma 3 invested with AhoyWorld. I remember the days when I first came to the server, fresh out of a milsim unit, and looking for something just as serious, but more chilled out. EU3, as it was then, was just what I wanted. Back in what I can only describe as it’s heyday back then, 3 was one of the best environments to game in; full of fun, approachable and ultimately very caring people. You had a laugh, but you got the job done while you were at it - you would fight tooth and nail for your team-mates.
In contrast: if I were to compare this to the current environment of AWE, I find myself reaching a stark conclusion - it is nothing close to that now. The AWE we all know now is not one true to the original spirit of EU3.

Not being of the original spirit of EU3 is a crucial issue to me; for now over a year I have been part of the team at the top of AWE. We came into being at a time of great uncertainty for EU3. We worked hard, extremely hard to arrest the freefall the community was facing at that time - and we did just that. In the short term we even enabled the server to prosper - player numbers went up. We managed to start rebuilding. But something went awry along the path, it has led us to the place we find ourselves now. A server where everything has been done with the best intentions, done for the right reasons, but not yielded the right results.

I set myself the personal goal of redeveloping EU3, making it into something better than what it had been before steering committee came to be. I wanted, and still do, to leave AWE in a position of strength, a position much better than the one it had been in. I have come to the realisation that this is something I have ultimately failed to achieve. And I hold myself personally accountable for that, for right or for wrong, for better or for worse. I have reached a point in life where I feel I have given everything there is for me to give to AW. Every time we have reached a milestone with AWE, I have known that we can do better, do more. This is perhaps why my goal has proven so elusive. However, the will to push forward, to do more and be more is no longer with me. I find myself more going through the motions, than actively driving myself to do better. I have lost the motivation to continue to fight forward. I must confess that I have been carrying on for some time knowing I perhaps needed a break, but I’m a give it your all, or not at all type of guy. I tried to take some time off during a holiday in the summer; it didn’t go well. Let’s just say there was a heated discussion amongst the staff team. Ultimately I felt that I had to do my part, step up to the plate as part of the team. That stopped me from taking the time away I probably needed to. It speaks to a larger issue within the staff team at AhoyWorld; but I’ll come to that further in.

Amentes made me aware of sunk cost fallacy, and this pretty much describes my feelings towards the situation I find myself in, perfectly. I have poured my heart and soul into AW, often to the detriment of other things in my life - but that’s the type of person I am, and I make no apologies for that. It is this total commitment, and the ultimately unattainable goal that I believe has left me in the position of carrying on now, for only the reason I have put so much into AW. That’s not something that is healthy, it is not something I should be doing to myself. It is not something I can continue to do any longer. The stress and weight of the responsibility that I hold is not something I can continue on with; not because of the expectations of others, but because of my own. Without some things seriously changing I cannot continue to give my all, give what I feel you, the community, deserve. And to me, that is not on.

If AWE were to be taken in a new, renewed direction; then I would most definitely wish to continue to fight on. I feel that if we were to return to some of the original beliefs of EU3 then we could, and would, progress forward. I am afraid that nothing will change without a radical shift in thinking though, and this is perhaps the straw that broke the camel's back. Coming to the realisation, that no matter how hard I push, some things will just not happen.
As for the staff team; there are elements of it that just don’t work at the moment. It is in a position of turmoil, where there is very little cohesion, and many divisions. I shall not name names, because that is not something I should do. However, I do believe in honesty and transparency, and so you, the community, should know about it. Those wishing to join the team should be critically aware of what they are getting into. I mean this with no malice, but instead a fundamental respect for those people who wish to step up, and do what is necessary.

I would like to pay homage to those past and present who have put every effort into EU3, now AWE; thank them for everything they have done. I would also like to say thanks in advance for everything that those who will follow me do. Without the dedication of so many people AWE would not be where it is now, and it will not go where it may go either.
In the end I hold myself personally accountable for failings here at AW. Because I know I should do better, but I can’t, not right now, and I don’t know if I will be able to again.

I promise you this, I will do my best to stay around AW as a regular player, to push for change as a regular player. I care deeply for this community, and writing this has been one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in a long, long time. I’ve had to stop 3 times now - and I confess, every time has been because I have teared up pretty badly. I suppose, I should probably finish this off with an apology.

I am truly very sorry for not doing better by you AhoyWorld.

    Best Regards and Goodbye,
    Copey

I venture that people's willingness to follow your orders is proportional to how much they trust you as a leader.  If you give orders that make sense and give the players some level of flexibility to do their job, I find they tow the line.

The general consensus regarding third-person gameplay is a 'don't ask, don't tell' mentality. As long as you don't call out targets you see glancing over that three-metre wall, I won't call you out on using that view.

AWE brings together a variety of different mindsets and many will, over time, pick up different traits from one another. In the case of third- or first-person views, it's far more likely that third-personers adopt the serious, realism-centric mentality of first-personers than the other way around. Someone who's learned to play with it won't just fall back on that old crutch.
In turn we get to enjoy banter with a larger, more open player base. I'd wager most of us wouldn't be here otherwise.

    So we benefit each other.
Bringing about a change specifically in order to rid yourselves of an entirely non-harmful way of enjoying the game is the polar opposite of what AWE has been so far.

Personaly went for TrackIR. About being a restless and moving around a lot I just bound a key to center view and fidgeted around with the sensitivity curves in the software to find a setting that suits me. Basicaly set mine up so that there is a slight dead zone before the tracker applies movement to the screen.

I bought a track hat a few weeks ago now and its great! I went with this kit.

I had some teething problems at the start with attaching it to my headset (Logitech G430) with the included zip ties as it was a curved surface and didn't stay on. I fixed it by using velcro. Cut two strips of the velcro the same size and stuck it on. It works really well as I can leave it plugged in and just reach for it when I need to and stick it on.

I've had a lot of success getting it to work in the different games (Arma3, BeamNG, Project Cars, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Train Sim 2017)
With arma, i haven't found it to work as well. I move around a lot (like karate) and it doesn't help with first person shooting, third person is fine (This is probably a settings problem and I just need to finetune). Other games it works amazing and it's definitely worth the money. The setup process isn't clear but it's not impossible, it may take you a few days to get each game mapped to a profile just how you want it. They are very helpful when I contacted them.

    Overall I recommend thoroughly

Ben don't feel too bad about the mission and the way it ended up. Some people gave you a hard time, but if they have opinions they should post them here along with suggestions on how to improve.

Here's my suggestion - and I'm going to sound like a broken record - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE ORDERS and the chain of command.

In real life, combat operations go to wrong all the time, like this one was supposed to. The story is a crashed chopper, everyone's lost their kit, command is down, orders are not flowing. So, in real life, soldiers have standard procedures which they follow, as well as a standard chain of command. One of the things we do worst is AWE is give orders properly and follow chain of command. Very simply put, most ASLs (including whoever was ASL during your op) have no idea how to give clear orders ahead of the mission. I just watched the stream and ASL says "we have no orders....." Not good. EVERYONE should know what the hell is going, and last night, nobody did.

As a mission designer it is your job to help the ASL (or PlatCo) give good orders. In other words, you need to give him the scenario, the intel, the possible situations that may develop, and in a case where you need a heavily scripted turn of events like this one, some hints as to what might happen. In other words, "what happens if the chopper gets shot down....." If you did, then ASL didn't pass any of that on to the TLs or the TLs didn't pass anything down.

    A couple of specific things:

    1) The respawn was in a bad place. I spawned back after the crash and immediately got shot in the head. That means I lost 4 minutes, and when I came back the second time I had no weapon and it took me a good couple of minutes to find one. I was combat ineffective for a long time, and then it took me even longer to sort of make sense of what was going on. Suggestion, move the spawn to a safe place, inside a house or something like that.

    2) My Shacktac stopped working on respawn. This was bad, because it's hard enough to find your squad with it, more so without it. I don't know if that was unique to me. I think that what you want is for people to get organised as soon as possible to get on with the mission. On the flip side, TLs were terrible at getting people organised. I lost my team and never found them again until the very end. I'm pretty sure they weren't looking for me. TLs have a responsibility to make their team function and not just run off, which mine did.

    3) Where I think things got very wrong was when the tanks showed up. I heard you say that the reason you put the tanks in was to keep people in the compound. But that was never going to happen. I think everyone just reacted to, "tank, we have nothing to kill it with, get the F out!"

    4) You had a chance to let people regroup at the airfield. I'm not sure if it was you who placed the infantry there or not, but there were bad guys with RPGs at the airfield and it was only natural for the pilots and ASL to get the plane to safety. When the RPG hit the plane, that was it, game over. My suggestion would be that you should have kept the airfield safe and delivered an Overlord message to secure the airfield, or something like that.

I think this just shows that players won't react how you expect, and if you expect them to react a certain way you should tell them. In other words, give them a Standard Operating Procedure ahead of the game.

My final thought, and a repeat of my previous comments: improve your briefing, take time to give good clear orders and intel. No mission in real life would happen without these. They shouldn't happen on AWE either.

And one for the community - ASLs and TLs, learn to give good orders!

Ben, don't get discouraged; don't give up on making missions.

And finally, I'm happy to help you write orders, give ideas for future missions, etc....

Why do you think you were banned? I have no idea. I was en-route to exfil from an AO in the South West area of Sahrani; at the time the AO ended Kingfisher (my copilot) and I, as Vortex 1, had no comms with ASL due to the distance and mountains between us. We attempted to radio ASL for instructions, but got a garbled, unintelligible answer; I responded saying as much and that we'd head over to collect them from the Airstrip we could they were approaching on C-Tab. As the AO was near an airstrip, we decided to use the C130 at base as an exfil vehicle, simply to break the monotony of helicopter extractions; there were between 15 and 17 other players active at that time. I let Kingfisher fly from the co-pilot seat with unlocked controls, as I had to go AFK for a bathroom break and to check on some food I had cooking, and returned to see us being shot down by AA at the airstrip as we were coming in to land. There was no report of any AA previously, and we'd flown over the AO as CAS and transport with no issues. Upon respawning, I was banned by Nicolai for disobeying chain of command.
I attempted to speak to Nicolai to find out why he banned me; shown below is the response I received.

Why (in your personal opinion) should your ban be lifted? I don't know why I was banned, and have not been told. I've been going through a pretty tough time IRL lately, and AWE is proving a really good way for me to chill out and forget the things that have made me lose sleep for weeks.

    Hi folks,

So it turns out that many of you don't like the new TS Tags, and that's fair.  This is a classic case of starting with a small task (fix the AWE moderator tag) that snowballed into a larger task (design something that makes sense across all the icons) and exploded into a big thing (create a whole new theme).

And it was done in isolation, assuming that it was such a small thing that no one would care or perhaps even notice.  Boy was I wrong!

So, here's how I'd like to go forward from here:

    1) We'll go back to the older tags for now.
    2) I'd like to start a design competition where everyone can submit their concepts for what new tags could be, with an actual prize.
    3) When people have made submissions, we'd submit them to a vote, in addition to the current legacy tags.
    4) If a new set of tags is chosen by majority vote, that person would win the actual prize. If the old legacy tags are chosen, then a random person who submitted tags will win.

and in general, any changes to all aspects of the site, no matter how small, will be conducted with consultation. I appreciate that you people care about how we do things here, and if you didn't, it wouldn't be the great place that it is.

    Discussion in this thread, thanks!

Details of the competition to follow, we will reserve the right to veto a design (No Boaty McBoatface!)
