    Ahoy
     
    After playing a couple of days and nights and nights, I decided to share my thoughts on EU1 gameplay I'm pretty new to arma multiplayer, so this just my feedback.
    I have played many nice missions on AW, and have met remarkable soldiers, leaders, or just role-playing folks. I enjoy AW, as it has this casual feel, is open to everyone (the server is full for most of prime time!)
    Any criticism here, is just my rational opinion on the gameplay and how I see it. Even if nothing would change (now I'm really looking forward to the upcoming IA3 release), AW is where i spend my arma-time.
     
    The IA mission system
    It's a wonderful baseline set of features (what else to say in it's birthplace, right?). What I miss is the "annex - and defend/hold" phase, which I understand is in the system, but is switched off at least on EU1. As all of this is probably going to mix/change a lot this weekend in IA3, up to the more general topics next...
     
    Command/Comms
    I really miss TFAR - or generally TS usage. I hate the ingame VON, which can't be split from the sound effects, into a headset. You cannot opt-out of channels, you cannot opt-in. That led to muting the side chat...
    Either way, it seems everyone just became allergic to the VON usage, even for useful info. But the text chat is so lame. it's too small, too short, too distracting, cluttered and inefficient. Relaying important information about coordination, enemy positions or imminent threats is very cumbersome.
    Also the discrete separation of map layers is annoying - see the chaos in LZ designation/in-vehicle picking, random marking deletion/spam or just missing info because you switched to the wrong layer by mistake comma dot comma dot dot dot damn...
     
    Classes, weapons, difficulty
    The AI is dumb. (although it might have improved a bit in the N>O update?). Yes, it's lethal at close range, but it's recce and reaction to engagement are a joke and long range ops are non-existent. It might be a feature, it might be a bug. But it has profound effects on the BLUFOR ops. Especially some classes.
    A MBT can wipe out all enemy armor in 2 minutes just by camping on a hill, at comfortable 1500-2000m away (haven't really seen enemy armor retaliating at more than ~1.2km).
    A sniper can have a picnic 1200m away for a whole day and shoot infantry with all the ammo he can carry (enemy snipers are pretty clueless even at marksman ranges of 800m). even marksmen/spotters with the large caliber guns can wreck havoc from 1000m, limited only by the Kahlia scope zoom.
    The issue becomes ridiculous using the 7.62's, when you can slowly chip away squads and garrisons, delivering the needed 2-3 hits at long range. Enemy squads just keep standing there after being hit, or they run for a bit, treat themselves and resume patrolling as if it never happened.
    When a reasonable player/team uses these assets, it's way too op and there is a lack of challenge to them. The effect is a little downplayed by rambo-mode tank drivers and snipers getting wasted...
    I see it can be related to balance and general accessibility of the gameplay, but these roles have it more difficult to get into the battle before it's over, than surviving/winning it.
    And more on "thermal imaging" later...
     
    Population, co-op and Tactical skillset
    Most of the time my impression of the mission flow is like this - never ending stream of helis hurling respawning random infantry into the AO. You are afraid to board one, because you don't know where it will go, or if it's a geronimo flight (my longest shot-down streak is like 7 flights). once successfully landed, people get out and the sprinting starts, to the action. If you stop or slow down you risk the route will be swept clean or you will be alone because everyone else just got wiped out. Increasing the enemy AA to press more squads into vehicle transport, or recon and LZ securing, seems unfeasible because of the quick respawning and revival of the "nas mnogo" tactics.
    People don't seem to really use the "technological" edge over OPFOR - a lot of times a quick scan of the AO with the range/laser will "light up" a lot of enemy troops on the map, somehow unseen by previous waves of invaders. The IR channel is also op in this regard, especially at night.

    Hello everyone,
     
    I'm proud to announce that after a lot of hard work @BACONMOP has finished I&A 3.
    I&A 3 will be the successor the the current I&A (2) that's running on the servers and has lots of different and new features such as a new medical system, the side missions now being linked to the current AO , a few "take-over-able" AO's and some nice things to do with the points you've scored playing.
     
     
    We are planning on releasing it live this Sunday (23rd) at 15:00 GMT after which it can be played on EU#1 and EU#2 on Altis and Tanoa respectively. During it's launch we hope that as many of you as possible can come on the Teamspeak 3 server and enjoy the refreshing new gameplay together.
     
    Before its release we would also like to make time for a community meeting specifically about I&A 3, where you can listen to how it works; but can also ask questions, which don't necessarily have to be about I&A 3; but could also be about AhoyWorld itself. 
    The staff present will then try their best to answer their questions or when unclear get back to you with an answer at a later time.
    This meeting would start and half an hour in front of the launch and would be from 14:30 till 14:55. Feel free to pop in at any time, but questions asked a second time will probably not be answered again; so it would be wise to show up from the start.

    Ok, 2 months later and I finally have some spare time again. I see a lot has changed and there are plenty of new rules and opportunities in AW, and I hope to get tome dedicated ops going again, as well as meet and greet all the new faces around here.

    But let's bring back those PvP Zeus ops, the zombies, and custom offshore platforms again shall we?

    We will see how this all goes.

    Hey guys, it's been fun, but due to a multitude of events over the past few weeks I'm postponing my weekly events for a while

    Short version: I only have so much time in the day, and I have to make cuts somewhere

    Longer version: Yesterday I was approached by some government officials (nothing serious, it goes back to my father and he has some friends, etc.) who offered to pay for the rest of my college in exchange for some work retaining to my future, both degree wise and beyond. This plays into my dream job and my plans of working for the government, so I've taken a second job on top of my VPN job. Therefor I have much less time on my hands. I would still be able to do events, however Luetin09 has given me an offer to host for him at the same time to take on the 20+ extra people that show up for his operations, and honestly that's another dream any event hoster could ever want. But these events need some time to plan...

    Long story short: I'll be back in a few months, for I am pursuing my dreams

    I'd like to thank everyone for their help on the admin team and to everyone who's come to my events, and if you ever want to talk, feel free to hit me up, but i'm not going to be on AW that much anymore because of my timing (and I start college in a week, so RIP)

    I appreciate the "setting a ruleset" for any ZEUS to get the guidelines and basic figured out.
    I really do,yet this doesnt at all helps in my very situation.
    We r jumping from "explaining individual tactics from individual ZEUS´s" to talking over engagement range to ... whatever comes nxt.
     
    My intial point for this post was the blatant sabotage by "several" ZEUS on more than one side mission i had the engagement on.
    This is far from discussing a "opinion" on how to act,shoot from which distance or use whatever tool that is to your access.
     
    Side Intel missions have rarely any chance of success due to either not understanding pubs,air units flying over it or just simply by the INTEL guy crashing to movement.
    Then deciding to "enhance" a mission without ANY notice to involved people (yes,me) then screwing me over to the point i loose any motivation to continue on that BS i got handed there by a "overconfident" ZEUS in order to enhance the mission then watching it fail is a unstandable offense ... and yet it happend more than one,two or three times!
     
    Everything has a limit and the stuff you "assume" me bitching about like a little girl with no background knowledge makes up for a hilarious read if it wasnt so sad ...

    Zeus at the moment while directly controlling ai killing players results in a TK message and for this reason is not being permitted at the moment.

    This is not up for debate.

    If a player joins and sees multiple tk messages and someone explains "oh that's fine he's an admin" it reflects terribly on all of us.


     
    The manner in which I use Zeus is as follows, others may use it differently.

    Lightning should be used in moderation and only for discipline for players who are tking spamming or otherwise breaking the rules. Players will get stuck for tking with no explanation reminded that tking is not permitted and will be kicked the next time an infringement happens.

    New units are spawned out of sight of players so as not to appear from nowhere. This ruins the immersion and gives players a feeling of helplessness whereby the feel as if they can't win.

     Zeus missions: I don’t do them because we have a fabulous canvas of mission within I&A that have stood the test of time and keep bringing back players. I find having Zeus missions dilutes it takes away from the main mission and adds little. Also it takes time and resources and there’s no guarantee that the sever won’t have to be restarted just as you’ve finished delicately placing all your items/units/buildings.

    I’m going to write up a list of do’s and don’ts for all new Spartans so hopefully this won’t be an ongoing issue.

    From what I was told, the objective of the Spartans is to create custom tasks and to spice up AOs if deemed appropriate.
     
    I'm of the opinion that the use of Zeus remote control can extend to killing players under the right circumstances, such as when a player exposes himself in a royally stupid way, and there's a medic around to get him back up. Used sparingly, it's just another tool in the box in trying to impart some human brains into the opposition.
     
    In the same vein, if players take advantage of the AI's "view distance", shooting them with Titan AT and AP from 3500 meters, safe from any retaliation, I'd personally have no qualms about shooting back.
     
    Zeus is there to enhance the experience for the players, but also to make the AI a bit smarter, more human.

    I saw some clumsy moves this week. I hope spartans will improve or somebody will show them the door if they will fail at that.
     
    I also saw some really good touches that made experience on server better!
     
    I have around 300h as a Zeus for small (6-8 players) circle of my friends. Here are some things i learned in that time sorted by importance.
     
    1. YOU ARE NOT PLAYING AGAINST PLAYERS BUT WITH THEM!
    Think how you can make their experience better. Sometimes you can get frustrated by your AI but never target that frustration towards players. Do not rise skill level just because you think players should die more. Stick to skill and aim skill you set at begining and raise those before only for special (story) units. Never use max.
     
    2. LESS IS MORE!
    In every situation. Think about this every time you are doing something as a Zeus.
     
    3. NO HOSTAGE SITUATIONS ON PUBLIC SERVERS!
    Are you frustrated that civilians/hostages are caput? Dont be and expect that your nice briefing notes will be seldomly read.
     
    4. NEVER KILL A PLAYER WHILE IN REMOTE!
    This is for the pros and pacifist monks amongs Zeus crowd. Spray all you want, suppress them, scare them, but never kill them. Leave AI to do dirty work for you. Also NEVER use TARGET command on player. You will save yourself some sour looks from players.
     
    Those are some rules from the top of my head.

    Well said Eagle-eye. Yes Scar i do see your frustrations, but the Spartans have a extremely steep learning curve this week and upcoming weeks, it really takes a long time to get that balance right, between fun and not fun, i.e too many units so people get bored and log off, or too little and they mash through the mission in 5 minutes. We can guide and show the way to spartan only so much, they do have to work things out on their own :). As Eagle said, if you do have any problems then please message an admin or to the spartan explaining your feelings. But thanks for letting us know.

    As background for those who don't know: earlier this week, 4 guys (incl. myself) have been accepted as Spartans, and thus given Zeus powers on the AW servers. This is why you will probably see a bit more Zeus presence in the upcoming weeks.
     
    As for my personal background and goals as Spartan, if anyone's interested:
    First of all, I should say that before Wednesday, I had zero experience with Zeus in multiplayer. What I DO have, is a lot of time spent in the editor and a vivid imagination. :) As such, expect a few crazy ideas and hick-ups here and there while I discover what I can and cannot do with my new powers. As of 2012, however, I've been responsible for flight ops, training and creating realistic missions for a mil-sim F-16 squadron in BMS, so I should know a thing or two about setting a scenario.
     

    My initial aim as Spartan is to discover the functionalities and possibilities by enhancing AI to a more realistic level. What this could mean is that I will put in more defences to protect a VIP or strategic location(s); place units in overwatch or forward observing positions; have OPFOR scout, flank or pincer a position where they would realistically suspect or know BLUFOR units to be located etc. Once I get the hang of things, and find a proper balance, I will probably start creating separate events.
     
    While I am Zeus, I will take positive control of AI that does not do what I think a real person would do (opinions will undoubtedly vary on this matter), in which case, I will from time to time actively engage BLUFOR. Though I usually give a warning about my presence when I'm remotely controlling a unit (e.g. popping a smoke grenade, missing the first shots intentionally), BLUFOR units may get hit and/or killed by my fire occasionally. If someone gets killed, the way how and reason why he died will decide my further actions. After a stray hit, I'll apologize, heal / revive you if I can, or teleport you back after you respawn. Land a Ghosthawk in clear line of sight of an Ifrit GMG, however, and remorse won't strike me as much...

    Aside from the mission enhancing/creating. I will do what you say a Zeus should do: assist wherever I can, while keeping an eye out for any questionable actions. Have a question or need help? Ask, and I'll give you the answer if I know it. Destroy BLUFOR assets (players and vehicles alike), and I will call you out on it. If it has an impact on the AO's progress (e.g. crashing a UAV or heli into the Radio Tower to destroy it), I will act accordingly. This may include the "Wrath of Zeus", so to speak.
     
     
    All that being said, I am aware I will have to find a balance between what I aim to do and intervening too much. I try to be firm, but fair. If you feel that is not the case, please call me out on it (in-game chat, Teamspeak or PM here) so we can discuss and I can learn.  I think, though I can not be certain of course, that this is true for the others as well, and things should settle soon enough.

    Right,over the past weeks on my playtime i notice a increase of ZEUS missions (which isnt necessarily a bad thing) but also a rapidly change in ZEUS actions!
    Back when this ZEUS thing came to A3 the gods focused on creating custom missions for a certain part of the community,helped out players and enforced server rules (to a limit) as a "right hand of admin".
    Nowadays tho,i witness a certain "overconfidence" on the (newer) ZEUS´s.
    In example,i got several screens of occasions a ZEUS thougt to "improve" side missions which turn out to either make the mission way longer and stressy than it used to be,up to a point where they complety fuck up any motivation on continueing the begone mission.

    So,what does this leads to?
     
    Firstly,i wanna quote this

    Improving a mission just because you can is not the wished behaviour for a ZEUS (imo) and i m eagerly waiting for a HQ response to the abov mentioned events.
     
    This is not how i want my I+A to turn out,you got "special" ZEUS servers,if you feel the need to play the overconfident ZEUS,fel free to play on EU4 and dont take your god given shit to EU1 if you cannot accept simple borders of creation!
    EU1 is a "beginner/starter" server,imo 1-2 ZEUS missions per 24h is doable,but i applaude for cutting down their actions by a lot because its simply put "tiresome" to face "mission beginners and their crazy thinking of how a MP mission should work on  daily basis.
     
     
    There sure is more to say,but this is ok to get a discussion started.
    Raise your opinions,critic,suggestions and even improvements here - i m expecting a shitload of response by the usual naabs here too,so i ll bite back.
    And lets see how HQ thinks about the actions of their created gods!

    Played here 1-2 years ago, came back a week ago and its cool, Already met some cool people in Teamspeak. and im pretty sure people are already tired of me.. SORRY
     
    So where am i from?, i've wasted the 1600 hours on Lifemods and Editor/Zeus. The community i played in sadly closed down after 10 months...

    The mission for this Team vs Team night will be Invade and Secure, a new mission mode based on the popular mode from Project Reality.  It is a sector control mission, where BLUFOR and OPFOR teams have an hour to secure sectors.  The sectors must be secured in order, and each team has 50 respawn tickets; when all sectors are secured, the timer reaches zero, or one side runs out of respawn tickets, the mission ends, and whoever holds the most sectors is the winner.

    There are no signups required for this game night, rather it will be first come, first served.  However if you're interested in attending, or want to but can't, post a comment here so we'll know whether we should look at rescheduling.

    The only thing i mark in side is the LZ itself, all other things I mark in vehicle, as this is the channel i'm tuned to while flying and with the new update i can't see stuff i marked in other channels.
     
    Well yes, i should work on a 'thicker skin'.
     
    I tried, multiple times.  The thing is most people do have the balls to initiate a votekick but not tell whoever they are trying to kick why they are trying to votekick him.
     
    As off 3 days ago, i started recording every time i join a public server (because someone shot a 30mm nade at me, killing me and my bird and got away with it).  In those 3 days i managed to capture: 1 mass TK at base, a guy shooting a 30mm at me (what is it that makes my chopper such a good target for 30mm nato grenades?)
     
    The thing is, i marked it in vehicle.
    And filing a player report for someone trying to votekick me?  I personally wouldnt do that.  People may think, hell they can even tell me, that I'm a bad pilot. But all they have to do is tell me and I'll see if there arguments make sense or if there are enough people that think it and i'll have 0 problems leaving the pilot slot FOR A BETTER PILOT.

    This is just a quick notification that we will - next to admin and moderator - also be opening up the Spartan program1 for public applications, which means that you can apply for this role now; though we still might hand pick candidates..
     
    1 = Spartans are the players with Zeus access on our public servers (EU#1 & EU#2)
     
    We’ve set up a couple of requirements you have to meet before your application will get considered, these are:
    No minimum position required.
    Must be a forum member for over 3 month.
    No warnings or kicks within the last 3 months.
    No bans in the last 6 months.
    Should be composed and trustworthy.
    Should be considerate and respectful, while this is not an administration role you will
    be representing the community to the public.
    Successful applicants must pass a Trial session and a 1 month probation period.

    As we would like to have an insight in what skills and creativity you already possess we would like to see some pre-built missions from you. As we would like to see the stage itself as well as what’s behind the scenes we urge you to include a “.pbo” next to some screenshots or video.
     
    We want to make sure you’re a trustworthy person and won’t just use the powers for your own benefit. This is why next to the couple of missions we would also like to recieve a small essay about your motivation behind your aspiration.

    After you have been accepted into the program we will also have a certain evening in the week in which you can try out your powers while an admin will be there to lead your first experience to good ends.
