Oh man, this has been a problem forever. The last time I tried to address it with the advisory screen (mission wouldn't load until an ASL was selected) there was quite the rebellion.

IMO, rearranging the squad composition is just rearranging the deck chairs.

KPSradical reacted to SkullCollector in Call Signs & Unit Composition
    Hello lovely people,
I thought to put this into the request board straight away, but someone with an opinion suggested general feedback first might work out better.

TL;DR: Change the call signs of Vortex / one of the Vortex teams, and merge support squads into FSG.

Vortex call signs, while nothing wrong with the name inherently, could work with a simple relabel to a name as decided on by the community or the Steering Committee. As yet Vortex is only distinguished by a single number which is easy to miss or forget in transmissions, especially during heated situations (yesterday's Zeus OP proved that to me in particular). We previously had Talon, and as I understand that was done away with because it suggested a CAS-specific role.

A number of ideas came up during a quick discussion on TS, some of which were as follows:
Torrent Whiplash chess-related, specifically Knight, Rook, Bishop, Pawn Phantom Reaper
(Thanks to @Copey and @Kingfisher. Copey foreshadowed an extensive list of ideas, so stay tuned for that.)

What I think this will do is prevent general confusion and allow pilots and co-pilots to add the single number to their call sign instead. Easier access, less risk to forgetting a number. And quite obviously it adds a bit of variety, which is always nice to have.
So we could mix things up and rename both pilot teams, or have Vortex + something else. Feel free to chime in with your own ideas for call signs.

    ---

The other thing that followed up in that discussion of call signs were the support teams, e.g., MAT and MMG.
As it stands we have two MMG teams, MAT and HAT which very rarely are all filled, let alone used effectively. Merging them into two general, say, 5- or 6-slot teams would enable them a bit of flexibility in their weapon of choice at the discretion of ASL / CMD. There will be less of an urge to reslot from MMG to MAT if required, and a general fire support group could also always deploy statics such as Mk19s and TOWs instead.
Perhaps give these FSGs unique call signs as well, just for the fancy.

Edit: Refer to my follow-up post that tried to include some of the feedback. TL;DR#2: Have 2x FSG with 6 slots each, one FSG specialised in AT, the other general and flexible.

So I would like everyone's feedback on this, as especially the FSG thing would change things up dramatically. What do you think? Would you amend something?
Once a sufficient amount of input has been gathered, this will be moved to or recreated in the request board for a final decision.

    Cheers.

@Colsta I know it was requested I linked it as a reference so ryko knew what I was talking about. Also no, its locked now and under review of the steering community so commenting is over. Just put it out there just in case they forgot that it does have the ranger vest that they might want. Thanks for the intended help.

@KPSradical Mod requests have a special sub-forum found here.
As you can see though, it already has been requested and is currently under public discussion, you can go there and give your own opinion, if you'd like.

With that being said, I am a little rusty from leading as I have only come back to EU3 recently. For those of you who played with me and under my command, plz leave feedback on what I did well and what I could improve on. All feedback is accepted and I would love to hear your thoughts. Some points I would like to comment on.

I have logged into server just as Origins called everyone together and announced the "run down the airstrip for f*** around" command.

No idea what happened, I considered opting out for 1-2 seconds, but also understood this was a disciplinary thing and so made the run with others without any comments.

You mention that running isn't real punishment in game. I would submit, that the sole act of running isn't realy the point even in real life. The point is to make the person(s) responsible to feel guilty about dragging their comrades down with them. That's why units are often disciplined "as a whole" - because there is no "I" in the army.

Sure, we are neither an army nor a milsim, but my logic is:
Make EU3 play like a discussion society, and see how that will waste MUCH MORE of everyone's time, than one run down the airstrip.
And the more people are logged on, the more amplified this is.

I have been an Admin on two other communities for about 1 year now (Arma Network alias Steve Sanchez just to name one). The communities closed down do do people stealing the mission file but (Thats besides the point). I will have to disagree with you thinking this is admin abuse. This is more admin friendly than ever. It plays more into the aspect of warning people without haveing to state that they are going to be kicked or banned. An admin always tries to deal with a situation in-game and tries to resolve it there. Kicking people randomly and banning them or using lightning is abuse. Making them run the airfield is not abuse. It plays into the aspect of what the military actually does to disciplin people. I fully back @Origins  desicion and I hope he does it more often.

Lack of knowledge of the systems is why we're trying to do training sessions. I honestly wish the majority of our playerbase would research and practice some of these systems and weapons on their own, and that also ties into why I haven't been making training happen earlier.

I remember a time when I could expect that people coming on #3 had taken a little time to familiarize themselves with the AT in use, and having read a little about how ACE and ACRE works. This is no longer my experience, and hasn't been for a long time. There's an initial investment on the part of players that isn't happening anymore.

As for giving people time to get their gear, ok, but I will still maintain that there is a time and place. I don't expect everyone to be like me, able to grab their kit in 3 seconds flat, but it shouldn't take you 5 minutes either. That said, this is not as much of an issue as it used to be, and I generally only see it with people who are late to the party, but still want their favorite helmet/uniform/vest. Sometimes I offer to load a kit and drop it for them, and on rare occasions, the offer is accepted.

Really, I don't personally care what "the community" wants. "The community" will want different things each month. I care what the people creating and maintaining #3 want. I didn't like everything Ryko did, and I didn't like everything that was done before his work. I've stuck around because, despite things not being as I would want them, they were similar enough that I could roll with the flow.

A long time ago, at the last EU#3-specific community meeting, I posed a question, wherein I essentially stated the above, but I never really got an answer. Without wanting to place blame, I believe that plays a part in why we're in this position now. We've essentially been escalating to this situation for about a year, with groups of players having a different interpretation of what #3 is about.

It's previously been stated, I think it was by Josh and some others if I recall, that there was a point at which many of the "senior" players left. After that, we've had a large influx of new players, some of whom simply haven't had the chance to be "groomed" because there were insufficient "groomers" around at the time. This has been a growing problem, which, I believe, has lead to our current situation.

Without guidance from above, this rift will not heal. We have groups in the playerbase that are hard-pressed to coexist, because their enjoyment of ArmA involves largely mutually-exclusive playstyles and levels of investment.

I'm personally very sad to see Ryko get pushed to a point of stopping Gauntlet development. Needless to say, I don't know what's gone down behind the scenes, what his mandate was, whether he overstepped it or not, but; to my knowledge everyone was very, very happy right up until the point where two changes were made, one of which I personally loved to bits.

I find it entirely unbelievable that this, after days of implementation, could cause so large a shitstorm. I don't believe these two changes were given a fair shot, and to be perfectly blunt, I don't believe much stock should be put in a poll. If people don't care enough to post a response, they might as well be voting on a knee-jerk reaction to change, necessary or not.

I'm sure I'll have more to say, but I'll leave it at this for now.

    Dear Community,

I understand that the the arsenal has been limited in that there are certain weapons that you can't get but I feel as if there is still to much. I understand that this is not a real Milsim group and that we don't have strict rules but it's time to grow up. I have seen life servers that are stricter with uniforms and weapons when it come to factions of tactical operations. We need to drastically limit the uniforms in EU3 to uniforms with tactical use. Certain maps should only allow certain uniforms and these uniforms should complement the role and location. And for gods sake the team should match for friendly fire purposes! The preset uniforms right now are good but need some tweaking. An there are so many weapons to chose from that any role can be anything. Maybe limit the weapons to 3 to 4 per role so things like mag count and others can be replenished by your buddies. This Is not eu1 or eu2. EU3 comes with responsibility and the agreement to work together as a highly operational unit. It's time to dress and operate like one. If you have any suggestions for uniform tweaks you would like to see please list them below.

Ryko I know it's hard work and I am not trying to replace anything. Sorry if I insulted you or anyone else that develops for this community. I am a texture developer and admin for another community called arma network my name is Steve Sanchez and I can confirm that, so I know how stressful it can be. I have had people want me to change things before and it takes a while for me to get around to it etc. I can create all the sets and post them on here so the community can see them. If anyone else has suggestions for what they would want to see for specific roles then suggest it here. This is a suggestion not an order.
