    Ahoy all,

Not much to report this month, we have some good news and unfortunately not so good news.

    AWE
    As you are aware changes have already been made in AWE;
Colsta has stepped down handing his Team Lead role over to Mouldy.
Repo size has been massively reduced to 16g in total.
There are more to follow which I can't go in to details just yet.

I would like to thank all the AWE staff team for their hard work in making this happen and continuing to improve the experience for all.

We are very close to completion of Invade and Annex 4 although no date is yet to be revealed.
Our first beta test will begin tomorrow Friday 26th October at 1900UTC on EU2.

    Lastly, the not so good news;
Our server fees and Teamspeak licence are due this month, once those are paid our funds will be critical.
Piranha has kindly donated privately to last us until Jan, If this trend continues then we may have to look at the possibility of closing down in January/February time.
We have already decided to drop down to a smaller Teamspeak server to save cost and are discussing other options to ensure our survival.

Haven't actually been on in a while but I've made a small donation. Hopefully I'll find some time to stop by and enjoy I&A4.

I'm a bad person and don't remember to donate on a regular basis, but if there was a recurring donation option I'd be all over that.

Mark T reacted to Johnson in Ballistic Test (1)
I thought I would run some more bullet ballistic tests using Bohemia's traceBullets function since I haven't tested vanilla, RHS and SMA weaponry in a while. I will likely do more tests in the future comparing more mods or weaponry and perhaps even make a Dslyecxi-style video to demonstrate this visually.

In the test I simply fired a few different types of rounds from a some vanilla and modded weaponry against a several 2-3 inch thick layers of plywood and then screenshotted the ballistic outcomes.

Bear in mind that this is an extremely simple demonstration of a very complex Arma 3 system. If you wish to see a more detailed explenation of the game's ballistic featuers, I suggest you check out Dslyecxi's video here.

The colour of the bullet's trajectory indicates its velocity as a percentage of the initial speed that it leaves the barrel at (muzzle velocity). The slower the bullet, the less damage it is likely to inflict upon its target / less chance of penetrating more materials.

    Colour chart:
    75%+
    50-75%
    25-50%
    ~25%

    (Vanilla) 5.56x45mm NATO --- (Vanilla) TRG-21/TAR-21

Pretty impressive trajectory and penetration considering the target could be hidden behind six wooden fences and you would be able to hit it a still very effective round. Heavy drop off at the end as the round likely breaks up. Bearing in mind that Bohemia do not state the exact designation or what type of 5.56 round is available in the default game, so this could be some futuristic 2035 technology.

    (Vanilla) 6.5x39mm NATO --- MX

Slightly more efficient than vanilla 5.56, especially towards the end of its journey. Not much else to say, pretty impressive all around. Perhaps this is a factor as  to why NATO made the change to 6.5mm Grendel in the Arma 3 universe.

    (Vanilla) 7.62x39mm --- (Vanilla) AKM

Realistically impressive penetration considering the age of the rifle and the round, supposing it is not a modernised version. Again, no exact designation or type specified for the ammo.

    (RHS) 5.56x45mm NATO [M855] --- (RHS) M4A1

Pretty damn poor penetration when compared to the vanilla 5.56, however a still very effective round for shooters who don't happen to have x-ray vision. The United States Armed Forces standardised M855 ball ammunition in October of 1980, meaning this is a very old round in comparison to the time period of Arma 3. Keeping this in mind, both vanilla 5.56 and RHS' M855 can find a place together in the game realistically, due to the fact that the vanilla 5.56 round is likely a much more modernised version of NATO's 5.56 calibre and therefore perform way better than a round that is half a century older. In other words, comparison between these two rounds should not revolve around balancing as they are from completely different time periods and not really competitive.

    (RHS) 5.56x45mm NATO [M855A1 EPR] --- (RHS) M4A1

Now were talking; a certain improvement over the round's predecessor... shame it took more than 30 years. Standardised in 2010, M855A1 Enhanced Performance Round was a direct result of the U.S military's concerns for the 5.56's lack of materiel penetration. Certainly more comparable to vanilla ammunition and perhaps even equally as competitive. Side note on this photo, I was aiming a bit too far downwards as you can see from the heavy drop. This means that the angle of penetration was increased and therefore the effective penetration of the round was reduced. More simply, should the trajectory have been a bit flatter, the round would likely have performed better.

    (RHS) 7.62x39mm [57-N-231(89)] --- (RHS) AKM

So that's why Russia keeps 7.62x39 lying around. Nearing the effectiveness of 2035 ammunition, the Soviet 57-N-231 (1989 variant) performs admirably and comparably to the vanilla version of the round. Keep in mind that this round is quite large and although the vanilla 5.56 may penetrate more than RHS' 7.62, it certainly won't hurt as much if it hits you. I used the 1989 version of the round since the original version is near obsolete in it's role of penetration, unlike M855 which is not made to punch through walls. RHS have some very modern rounds to compliment there weaponry, I just chose a round I would expect to be comparable to vanilla and SMA. Russian 5.45x39mm 7N22 would likely penetrate into the fourth box and maybe even out the other side, so be sure not to assume that RHS does not have tools to satiate your need to destroy.

    (SMA) 5.56x45mm NATO [M855A1 EPR] --- (SMA) M4A1 blk

I've always been sceptical of criticism towards Red Hammer Studios (RHS) when compared to Specialist Military Arms (SMA) and I think this photo pretty much sums it up. A fair few members of AhoyWorld have stated that RHS is under-powered and noncompetitive when facing vanilla-asset factions such as PLA. Personally I have always found that through testing and experience, it isn't that RHS is under-powered but that SMA is over-powered. This test only confirmed my suspicions. A clear difference can be drawn between RHS and SMA weaponry through this screenshot. While each mod's version of the exact same weapon and ammunition have been demonstrated, SMA's M855A1 is clearly more effective in penetration that RHS' own version. SMA's M855A1 penetrates better than vanilla 2035 5.56mm and 2035 6.5mm while being a round that is 20 years older. Additionally, due to my dreadful aim, I fired low once more - meaning that, as described previously, the round may have even penetrated even more walls than it did. It may have even gone out the other side of the final box and kept on going, considering where the round stopped. It only had 1 more wall left to penetrate.

These simple tests were mainly intended to update existing knowledge of ballistics, but also to deflect and appease notions of poor RHS performance. Of course these tests were extremely basic and can be used for not much more than a first step in comparing mods, I just thought it might be cool to see.

If the post is recieved well I'll likely do more, or just a video. Maybe comparing BAF or keeping it just within the current modpack (mostly RHS). Then it could be used to inform players as to which rounds/weapons are most effective at certain tasks.

Mark T reacted to Mouldy in Enhanced Server Update
Hi everyone, I'm Mouldy, and I'd like to give a quick introduction for those of you who may not know much about me.

I started playing on Ahoyworld EU#3 Modded in September 2015.  It was exactly the kind of community I had been looking for: a public server with radio-environment mods, and a focus on more realistic squad-level gameplay.  In May of 2016, I was invited to become a moderator for what is now the Enhanced community, and I've been here ever since.

With introductions out of the way, Colsta has recently stepped down as AWE Team Lead, and I am excited to take over the position during this pivotal moment in AWE history.

AWE, at its core, has always emphasized teamwork, having fun, and player driven creativity.  The mods that we employ on the server are in pursuit of this idea, but recently player sentiment has shifted. Many in our community have decided that our current modset is too bloated, to the point of being almost unusable by the average player.  Of all the different kinds of people that come to play on the AWE server, everyone who has approached us has said the same thing: "We want less mods."

The Enhanced Moderators are in full agreement with the community.

We have heard your ideas, discussed some of our own, and decided on a course of action that we would like to take with the server.  These are changes that the community has asked for, and the mod team has agreed is a direction that we should pursue for AWE.

The revised modset for AWE will be trimmed down significantly in the next repo update. We are looking at the minimum requirements for our ideal AWE experience.  Mainstays like TFAR, ACE, RHS, and a few choice maps will remain. But practically everything else is going to be cut from our modset.

This will bring the repo size down to around 16GB(from 30+), which is much more palatable for prospective players, and we hope to capitalize on this with more promotion and events once these changes are live.

We would love to hear the community's feedback in regards to these proposed changes in the Enhanced subforum, please visit the official thread here.

The AWE Mod team has some more ideas that we're excited to explore, but we're not quite ready to announce anything yet!

Thank you all for choosing Ahoyworld, and our Enhanced server.

    Ahoy All,

It's that time again for a brief update on what's been happening inside and outside of AhoyWorld.
Not much has been going on behind the scenes with regards to administration, some have been busy with real lives while the rest (@Ryko) have been focusing on the development and testing of I&A4.
In this update I have decided to try something new, a letter from Core, rather than just hear me waffling away, you will also be hearing from the rest of the team.

I would like to start off by welcoming @BorderLive and @J0hnson to the AWE moderation team, both have vast knowledge and experience within the community and have ideas that will hopefully help revive AWE.
Discussions are well under way on what to do with Enhanced and what plans we may have for its future, all will be informed along with your valuable input before anything goes ahead.
We are looking for more active Enhanced moderators so if you feel you meet the requirements, apply here

Keep your eyes peeled, we will soon be hosting another competition for a chance to win the Official SCUM game.

Last but not least, I would like to thank everyone who has participated and contributed to the development and testing of I&A4 and look forward to seeing what the final version will offer.

Discussions are well under way on what to do with Enhanced and what plans we may have for its future, all will be informed along with your valuable input before anything goes ahead.
We are looking for more active Enhanced moderators so if you feel you meet the requirements, apply here

Last month we ran a competition for our Donors to give them the opportunity to display their very own image on our I&A4 billboards. (gutted mine didn't make the grade) so I would like to thank @Stanhope and @Michal who posted numerous pictures which are already live around the base.

Keep your eyes peeled, we will soon be hosting another competition for a chance to win the Official SCUM game.

Last but not least, I would like to thank everyone who has participated and contributed to the development and testing of I&A4 and look forward to seeing what the final version will offer.

    Ahoy All,

It's that time again for a brief update on what's been happening inside and outside of AhoyWorld.
Not much has been going on behind the scenes with regards to administration, some have been busy with real lives while the rest (@Ryko) have been focusing on the development and testing of I&A4.

    Hi all,

    I will keep this brief,

As you've all probably noticed Piranha hasn't been around much lately, this is due to a number of reasons which I won't go into, so with a heavy heart he has decided that it would be best for the community to step down from his leadership role and hand the reins over to me.

This isn't my first rodeo, and I'm sure further down the line I may make mistakes, possibly big mistakes, and bad decisions that not many people may agree with. Nevertheless what I can bring to the table is openness, transparency and hopefully stability.

There are a few areas that I will be looking to improve on; clarity of roles, community engagement and most importantly communication within staff.

I hope that you will all back me through this difficult period and be patient with me in trying to turn this community around.

Remember, if you have any ideas/suggestions please bring them to us, we are always looking to improve.

Lastly, I would like to thank @PiranhA for his contribution and wish him all the best for his future endeavours.

Version 035 of I&A 4 is on server now and undergoing testing.  We'll be doing another Alpha Test on Friday (1800GMT)

    Change log:
    1. Tweaks to compass direction (vehicle direction if driver, player / gunner direction in other cases)
    2. CSAT Xi'an added to vehicles whitelist for co-pilot allowance; base default Xi'ans now spawn unarmed. Reward Xi'ans spawn armed.
    3. Removed Scout version of the Nyx from Independent OPFOR vehicles.
    4. Only non-incapacitated players now considered for medical alert (players nearby who could revive you).
    5. Fixes to destroy cache mission.
    6. Tweaks to soldier blue force tracking (should stop it from disappearing randomly).
    7. Players not in your group will now show name and rank tags within 30m. Players in your group, this range is 200m.
    8. Fix for ground vehicles excluding gunners ('Co-pilot disabled on this vehicle')
    9. Added automated team-kill sanction measures (three strikes rule).
    10. Tweaks to medical actions (should get reward points for revives?)
    11. Restored ability of zeus players to remove players from group roles in squad management.
    12. Removed admin notification of player suicides, as no easy way to detect between manual respawn or just bleeding out.
    13. Add night vision goggles to all default loadouts.
    14. UAV operator now has access to artillery computer.
    15. Removed RANDOM button from Arsenal.
    16. Tweaks to OPFOR awareness, after calling in support, OPFOR units will return to patrol waypoints after dealing with threats.
    17. Added automatic parachutes to air vehicles (if you jump out of a helicopter, you'll automatically get a parachute; your backpack will be restored when you touch down).
    18. Revised arsenal. Suppressors and bipods are now reward-purchased items. Slight limit on weaponry as you can purchase additional weapons with reward points.
    19. Added weapons and gear purchase functionality to reward menu.
    20. Fix for donating points to group leader.
    21. Added reward-purchased deployable ammo box functionality with faction-specific box loadouts.
    22. Added first version of AI Buddy (purchased with reward points)
    23. Secondary missions: extended timeout to minimum 25 minutes, plus an extra 5-10 minutes. Also, first person detected by enemies in the secondary AO will trigger a bonus 10 minute extension.
    24. Added new secondary missions: destroy enemy artillery pieces and destroy tank platoon.
    25. Added remote designator backpack to Spotter class.
    26. Default quad bikes set to faction type.
    27. Time multiplier changed to default 6x, parameter option for 12x.
    28. Completely removed Freedom / Liberty / +turrets for AAF

    (not a bug)report/rant

today's experience probably more showed the direction of IA4 as such - much more dynamic, natural and organic. and in the current test setup, much much much harder. if you don't move, you die. id you don't coop, you die.

increasing the AI skill, or it's ability to return fire at 500m, move fast and randomly should provide enough havoc. There seems to be far less 'static' troops which just wait to get dropped.
But they also seem to have too big balls of steel, as suppression is not really working on them, which makes them feel like a robot army again.
hm, i wonder whether humans of EU1 look the same way to the AI though...

AI will always have bugs, I had some ambients appear in breathing range, just step me over and continue moving.

speaking of ambients... it will be devastating for players having to cover their asses when AO is done, much more than the present danger of "AO spawnkill". especially of troops at range can have a very tough time exfiling, when a squad suddenly rises near. anyway, whole shiploads of smokes will have to be added and used in loadouts.

My fav, sniping, finally will have some challenge, even without full ace ballistics. As mentioned, at shorter range, when counter-detected, the AI will mercilessly hammer your position. At greater distances, ~1000, the more lively movement patterns will make the job harder. Also the risk of being just stepped on by ambients from all directions around the AOs adds a beautiful concern and could generate demand for spotters which would be fantastic

one deployment had me paradrop across katalaki bay. after being shot at in the air, i broke contact on landing. patrols across the bay were still looking for me and when I took some out, they went crazy, suppressing really good, pinning me down in hard cover. And then they just sent a gorgon all the way around the bay to finish me. That was oddly satisfying.

btw, the automatic "paradrop" feature is nice, it's basically teleport to any location, and solves the issue with parachute-vs-backpack vanilla problem, which is convenient. my concern would be that it might steal pilots' jobs, being priced only at 10 kills.

Lonewolfing will get more difficult, but the ability to revive "for all" could help create/favor small, buddy teams. Here the squad system might get a bit in the way, as for now, dynamically creating/changing squads is limited as such and outright not possible in field. Otoh, it's a result of the complex (and great) features that come with it, like rewards, locking, budgets and all that stuff.

I agree with what almost all in the test felt - the potential is great. And I hope a nice balance of difficulty, scaling and user satisfaction can be found to keep reasonable number of EU1 population interested and engaged (sic).  Also the idea of having a second server "turned up a notch" sounded really good if that would be practicable.

Again, at this level, the gameplay was less casual than current EU1, you need to watch out, move and beware of mistakes. It does not allow you the same level of "reckless" style, which is an advantage and risk at the same time.

I hope after the current bug fixes, the fun of large-scale balancing will start soon, because I like IA4 already.

    Hi guys!

I'm Matthew, but in game I go by Mattadee (however you can really call me either, I'm not fussed). I'm 20 years old now living in London whilst I'm on my degree programme, although I have high hopes that even once that's tied up and finished around about April/May, I'll have found some form of employment and will be able to stay in the city. I've also been playing ARMA 3 since alpha... so, years.

Which brings me onto the next thing. Some of the AW admins and veteran community who have been around for years and years now may be thinking 'I swear we used to have a Mattadee around here'. You'd be right. This isn't actually my first forum post, and I'm far from new to AW. I played a lot of I&A right back when the game was in the middle of it's development cycle and we were all still eagerly waiting for the Apex expansion. The future ahead was bright, but alas university caught up with me and the reality of having to juggle studies with a new bustling social life and PC gaming caught up with me, and ARMA had to take the hit.

Writing this now I still have one year left of studying, and it's arguably the most intense of the three. Therefore, it seems silly that I've decided to reintroduce myself now of all times. However there is one simple caveat which I know will draw me back to I&A naturally. And that caveat is a brand new PC. It's been something I've wanted to do for a long while, but I've never had the financial capacity as a young boy to do a proper computer upgrade. But now I can! And it's great, I'm actually able to fly a helicopter and get more than 10fps now! Isn't that just wonderful.

So, that said, I hope to be about a bit more and perhaps even try to make my stamp on the game and the specific mission that has been a feature of my gaming years ever since I was 15 years old and technically too young to even be playing. I look forwards to seeing you all around on the forums and in the Teamspeak

    All the best
    -Matthew
