    D34TH reacted to SkullCollector in [AWE] 111 / 112 Fireteam & Squad Leadership -- 11/05/2017
Event Date: Thursday, 11 May 2017
Event Time: 1830 UTC (see what time that is for you!)

Description: A combined session for aspiring tactical leaders to be run through the fundamentals and intricacies of battlefield leadership.

These workshops will run in parallel - the regular training team will be in charge of 111, while Copey will show you everything there is to know about good squad leading.

    111 Fireteam Leadership
tasks of an FTL leadership fundamentals awareness tactics communication skills standard commands and phrases etiquette
    112 Squad Leadership
tasks of an SL how to not micromanage fundamental logistics low-level strategy communication on LR coordination between second-level elements target designation & fire missions
To top this all off, we're going to have a mini-gamenight to put all of your newly acquired skills to the test. Volunteers will take (or a lottery will assign) leading roles to guide all the attendees and possible JIPs through a Zeus scenario. You will get a debrief so you know how you fared.

    ---

Because of an underlying issue on AWE that is the lack of volunteers for upper-echelon positions, we have decided to break up our intended progression and bring forward our leadership sessions right after the introduction.
Building upon this, we're going to return to our regular schedule for 103 Fireteam Tactics the session after.

    Cheers
    The Training Team

"Altis has fallen to the CSAT forces, and it is up to you to take it back. Embark with your teammates on a persistent campaign that will span several weeks of real time to liberate all major cities of the island."
     - GREUH Liberation

I'd like to see AhoyWorld host this as a weekly event, with minimal if any mods, but with a command structure closer to AWE.

Liberation essentially boils down to a teamwork-oriented PvE mission to slowly but surely conquer the major cities of Altis. Along the way, smaller points are contested for resource points and equipment unlocks.
It has currently been ported onto a great many maps, and as such it could feasibly be run on other maps after the completion of Altis, provided it attains the playerbase to make it worthwhile.

Liberation involves building defensible bases, attacking varying levels of enemy occupied strongholds and protecting captured areas from counter-attack, all the while capturing resources used to requisition vehicles.
The single Commander slot is essential, as he controls individual player permissions, default permissions for newly connected players and has the option of using a de-clawed Zeus interface to control friendly AI units should he deem this necessary.
Player permissions revolve around rights, essentially being the ability to operate Armor or Air vehicles, as well as the Buy and Build menus.

The event could be run weekly, with a trustworthy AhoyWorld representative taking the reins as Commander.
Players could join as an existing group of friends, or as single individuals. Singles would be grouped up together in any number of groups.
Groups could communicate via Group Channel or a TeamSpeak channel.
Commander could communicate with Groups via Command Channel or TeamSpeak Whisper. If necessary, could also relay faction-wide messages via Side Channel.

Microphone would preferably be a requirement for all players, and groups would be expected to work toward the task given by Command, but have autonomy on that task.

Liberation comes pre-packaged with a system to save the map state between sessions, and defaults to automatic saves every 60 seconds. As such, progress would be relatively safe from crashes.
Liberation is run by many servers, but almost exclusively constantly up, meaning mostly without a Commander present. This tells me that there is interest, but that it could be done in a more organized manner that may attract players.

D34TH reacted to BlastaMasta in Proposing a few changes
The thing that bugs me about this thread is not @Stips suggestion, but the way people are reacting to it. Or to be more precise how people are giving him negative rep for merely making a suggestion. I honestly don't think the reputation system is meant as an "upvote/downvote" functionality like reddit for example and in my eyes it should only be used to mark spammers/people that post shit and the like. Of course you can give rep for things you like but don't shoot down things you dislike. Rather write a post and discuss! This is a forum after all.

Making constructive suggestions should not be discouraged like this. Anyone who has good ideas might get scared and think "oh, well.... what if they screw my rep.. nobody will take me seriously if they look at my profile". This is a bad thing as I'm sure there are a few good ideas floating around in peoples heads that might actually improve the experience for us all. Anyone should be encouraged to voice their opinions on all aspects of gameplay and to suggest improvements.

As for the actual suggestions, yes, I agree with the others that it would be a whole lot of work to implement these changes and I don't see them working out all too well to be honest..

I'd really like to see this in action on AWE once as I've already proposed artillery/indirect fire support on my own thread about it
We could do a few test rounds with some mortarts on AWE or maybe even get a bit of training by more experienced mortar operators like @Karate Pyjamas. Even if it's just for fun! I'd definitly be down for that!

    Shameless plug.

Anyway mortars can quickly become OP and you need a very good gridref from the commanding element calling it in. Mortar on a slant or tilt? You're screwed. I'm very much up for it, but it's very difficult to accurately and effectively use it. After firing you really need to keep good contact with the front line so they don't accidentaly march right into the splash zone. I'm more than happy to take a mortar team sometime and test it out. I've played a lot with the mortars in the editor, using the range calculator it actually works for the 3CB mortar now too, had to do a lot of experimenting to get the muzzle velocity right. It's still a tad wonky, but it gets the job done in a similar accuracy as the range card. The spread however, is huge, no matter what you use to range it.

That said, the 3CB mortar is a blast *pun intended* to use as it's moderately realistic in it's operation and the amount of ammo you can carry and how you carry it.

Mortars start unspawned. They will spawn if BLUFOR is detected by OPFOR, so if you're super sneaky, you won't see mortars. However Arma AI has a pretty godlike ability to detect you.

After that, they will only fire HE shells if they have accurately ranged you.

OPFOR has to basically spot BLUFOR  3 times in the same spot (e.g. moved less than x meters in a defined period of time). Then mortars will hammer you.

    1. ASL has access to virtual mortar support, so it's not like it doesn't exist at all in Gauntlet
    2. We've historically placed mortars in the confines of the Logi squad, but until recently we haven't had enough players to mandate a Logi squad.  That said, IMO platoon command can authorize anyone to use mortars as dictated by the demands of the mission.  Just make sure you're following server rules.
    3. AI mortars are carefully controlled by script rather than regular AI.  If this were not the case they would rain absolute hell down upon you.  As it stands now, they really only fire if you decide to camp in a location and snipe ... which is exactly why the mortars were introduced in the first place.  Also, mortars follow this script:
    - range target with smoke (daytime) or flare (night time)
    - fire initial shells
    - become more accurate over time
So if you decide to stick it out through mortar fire, you will inevitably get wasted.  That said, the script isn't perfect.

@Stip i like the base setup as it is @ new map start.  i would like zero re-spawns of destroyed vehicles during  all the missions in each map ... one base loadout  per map would make taking care of assets more important / increase immersion / increase the logistics' role imo

Couple of things you can do:

Check your ace files against the repo, you might find an error. If not, delete your ace folder and re -download.

Force a Battleye update (this works most of the time)

The error its showing is just telling you Battleye is blocking the ace file from loading, so by either updating the file or updating it, you should fix it

For this sort of close encounters with armoured species, I would recommend using smoke grenades. Obscuring vision of AI operated armour will give you far more options then blowing one of its tires with "enhanced" incendiary.

Also worth considering is the fact that to my knowledge no AT grenade is being manufactured right now and last was Russian RKG-3EM which was replaced in the 1970s by RPG-18.

As image (or video) is worth a thousand words here is some example, so we can all see what is being discussed.

Just gonna point out, while HAT isn't well suited to close-range engagements against Armor; MAT can do a very good job at this, and I've personally been in many a situation, both as SL and as MAT, wherein I felt MAT would be much more effective in proximity to Alpha, than sitting on a hill.

MAT is very adaptable in this regard; always keep that in mind

I'm calling out to players interested in COOP sessions with this workshop mission created by Mark Boardman.

Let's get together and find a good time to enjoy this mission. Calculate 1.5 to 2 hours mission duration. Please leave a comment on this topic to receive invitations for multiplayer sessions.

I'm looking for people who are willing to play this in a team oriented fashion using a tactical approach, reduced loadouts, dedicated roles, high difficulty, first person only, TFAR, Vcom AI.

Mission description from the Steam workshop page "Dynamic Recon Ops is a randomised, replayable scenario that generates an enemy occupied AO with a selection of tasks to complete within. This collection contains the same scenario on various different maps."

Dynamic Recon Ops Steam Workshop Page https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=722652837

    Things to note
    * Dynamic Recon Ops is currently not supported on dedicated servers, hosted multiplayer only
    * ACE3 is not supported (it may work in a basic mode, when one disables the optional mission specific respawn framework)

Possible mods to run it with
    * different parts of AW modsets (mag repack, ShackTac HUD, ...)
    * Dynamic Recon Ops exists for a high number of maps already in the AWE repo and more
    * DynaSound 2.0 (when using vanilla factions)
    * Vcom AI 2.81
    * TFAR
