Having taken part last night, the small group learning is always great. Thanks to John for doing it, and everyone else for taking part. I'll probably take part in another one, but, its all about getting confident to do stuff.

Hello everybody, i will be doing a basic flight school for I&A this week.

Anybody can be a good pilot, you do not need a joystick or TrackIR. I started flying with my mouse and keyboard when Arma 1 was released i then flew with TrackIR and a logitec G940 which was awesome  but now that those no longer work after 2 years abuse im back to my mouse and keyboard.
Dslyecxi from shack tactical fly's with mouse and keyboard but he has TrackIR. Now If you have a joystick you do have a pretty decent advantage and better control on your landings, but if the approach is proper, a landing should be pretty simple. And like they say practice makes perfect, if the servers are empty or you are board hop on the editor and fly around push your self and find ways to make your flight safe.

You will not receive any kind of special treatment over others when it comes to who gets a pilot slot!!!!

This is gonna be done on my own private server run off of my computer (10 Slot's) Maybe EU 4 if it is available.

If you are not able to land/take off without autohover, i suggest you practice more in your editor and join us the next time i do one of these.

Things We will go over! (Basic's)
    - Choosing the right helicopter for the job!
    - Safe flying habits for around the base!
    - Choosing a LZ!
    - Choosing a mental flight path!
    - Taking off!
    - Flying to the objective!
    - How to evade enemy AA jets!
    - How to approach the LZ
    - How to land at a LZ!
    - Coming back to base!
    - Approaching the base!
    - Landing at the base!

Note some of the thing's i will teach you might push you past your comfort zone, but its gonna be just us in the server so if you do mess up just learn from it, thats the point of using the editor and little classes like this.

Get in while you can, depending on my work schedule i might be able to do 2 in one day.
    - 1 [Liru]
    - 2 [CobaltCat]
    - 3 [PO57Code]
    - 4 [SOMEONE]
    - 5 [Tony Pestroni]
    - 6 [Anyone]
    - 7 [Stian]
    - 8 [OPEN]
    - 9 [OPEN]
    - 10 [OPEN]

Next week we will cover the basic's of flying CAS and the AA jet.

I don't think anyone is expecting too much from the actual I&A/Zeus missions, the main thing is to get to see the new map, and don't forget the new vehicles!
Since people obviously can't wait to try out Apex I think the priority should be on getting a server running it asap.
I'm thinking just a very basic base, just set up the spawn area and VAS/Arsenal. The rest (vehicles) can be placed by a Zeus as I'm sure there will be a few available. So more of a sandbox server, hopefully with some decent Zeus missions.
This temporary set-up would be running until a working I&A is made.

You can expect the server to be VERY busy, so maybe a forum post can be made with a (estimated) time when the server goes live so we could all get on teamspeak so that we can join in at the same time?

Is there/Will there be an option to change the skin of the Forum?
I LOVE white... but for forums I tend to use a darker shade, as the brightness tends to hurt my eyes after a while.

Thanks in advance, Site looks great, very impressive, and I can't wait to see how it all looks/feels once everything is in place and running as you intend it to.
Keep up the good work guys.

As discussed in the meeting we are looking to update the website and with it, the website logo. We decided to throw it open to the users for a logo submission if you want to, but there are a few guidelines:

    - Logos must be submitted by Friday 13th of May.
    - It must be your own work.
    - It must be resizeable and recognisable through all resolutions down to 16x16.
    - If your logo is chosen the logo will remain your property however AhoyWorld will obtain unlimited usage rights.
    - Logos should be submitted here on this thread.

If you want to have a go, get stuck in! If not, then just sit back and carry on what you were doing.

Having tested the ambush technique last night, I've found setting the units to stealth and hiding them on likely lines of approach, works fantastically well. The sheer 'what the hell' coming on TS from the 6 man NATO team pushing in, was quite interesting (took them about 20 minutes to get past 3 rifle squads, and 2 statics). Testing is something that needs to be looked at...

Yes it can be done, yes it has been done, but people don't really talk about it because it doesn't happen often.
I myself have managed to Solo AO's just by switching between UAV and Sniper....
It's not hard if you have patience.
I have also managed to complete certain Side Missions without firing a single shot, by crawling and using smoke grenades.
People will find ways to complete Missions with what is available given the right circumstances.

P057code got a reaction from Ezlann in Luetin's Zeus Operating guide tba - Please give thoughts on Ambush
To carry on from what Johnny has put, some of our best/favourite missions are the ones where theres little/no armour involved, such as the Island assault missions where we've had to think out how to assault, and small, well placed units have caused us large amounts of trouble. Limiting UAV/FSG support is also something that I can see working, and may make for better gameplay, as it forces players to think on their feet so to speak.
Limiting long range optics is an idea that may work, as, its more than easy for a decent player to stand off and engage from 1000+metres and completely obliterate a team that won't fire back.
I enjoyed the defence mission the other week, where the more proactive AI infantry was involved, and I feel that if they were used as a defensive tool on a Zeus night in a mission (something like Op Onslaught played using that could be completely different, as would an Op.Guerilla done again using the modified AI), then the type of play expected may be different.

I sometimes get a bit fed up of the constant grind of taking out AI vehicles, as they can be a bit OP in some areas, and cause a blockage to occur, although, using a Marid or Ifrit in a hilly area where they're expected, combined with foot patrols of infantry, could be interesting.

As for the 'changing sides' question, I know its possible within Zeus (maybe the Ares side) to set an OPFOR/CSAT spawn point, which you can move depending on the state of play. If the way you want to do things involves using players playing as CSAT/AAF, then perhaps get that set up before you start streaming, and they can be a hidden extra that people on the stream don't see, and as such, won't be aware of until they appear in the middle of an ambush, or a battle. Its easy enough for them to hide away in a side channel on Teamspeak, and to contact you that way, that way, you could even get involved yourself as a 'player', instead of controlling the AI and Zeus/play that way.

For the missions, I'd also like to see a slight change to the way in which we use the CAS aircraft (or any form of fire support, such as Mortars or Pawnee). As it is now, a lot of pilots are more than happy to fly over the 'front line' and pick up targets that way. I'd like to see it used in the way in which the mortars were used last week on the two missions. Where a squad can contact the FSG team, either by TS or side chat, and 'talk' them onto target, by marking it on the map with a specific marker, then asking for the fire to be provided (we asked for a mortar strike to be danger close to ourselves when pinned down by infantry twice last week, and both times, we managed to get enough, accurate, support to allow us to get back into the fight. This also occured on the second mission when we attacked from the north before we got to the wall where the Ifrit got stuck, we asked the mortar team to lay smoke for us, and it allowed us enough cover to push forward.
Of course, this is something that a pilot may struggle to attain, in terms of accuracy, but, is it something, that you could provide yourself, using the 'airstrike' instructions within Zeus, (as well as the Mortar or Artillery support). You may not want to do this, but I hate facing air support or mortars more than facing a tank or IFV. At least you can see the tank/IFV before it kills you.

    **off topic deviation alert**

A lot of the players we see on EU4 for the Zeus nights are becoming regulars, as well as the few extras you see, so let us know what you want from us, and we'll try and help you out the other way. If you want to supply an LZ/FOB for us to work from, tell us, don't leave it unmarked and then wonder why things go wrong (we potato people can be a bit stubborn at times ), if you want us not to use LMGs, then ask us, we can try to get a loadout thats more CQB or marksman based. I feel that the streams are something that everyone involved can benefit from, from yourself, to the players and finally, Ahoyworld.
I record my POV on most nights, and a fair few others do. We may not be able to stream, but everything we do on there is something that can be used to make a stream night more entertaining or educational to the viewer, then I'll be glad to help, and I'm sure others will.

Spot a bit of good play from someone on the stream, ask if someone on there is recording it afterwards, then you can get a bit of video from them explaining how they ended up there, such as the Ezlan solo incident the other week. To view that from his POV would be something completely enthralling from a specators POV (probably just as good as watching your stream), we all know how it ended, but of course, his view was completely different to others.
The same as if you spot something that leaves you confused as to how the team ended up where they did (such as the right flank team on Op. Mike, who went wandering through the woods on the way to the castle), theres a lot of stuff that won't appear on your stream, such as the conversations between players on TS where the route is discussed and how we're going to do it, and I'm sure, if they were made known, then the gameplay would improve. If theres anything that can be done to improve the stream as a whole, let us know.

P057code reacted to Optio in [HOW TO] Operate the UAV's
For me UAV operator slot is a lot about micromanaging and multitasking with all the drones. I was trying to rewrite this guide for myself and make it some sort of TODO checklist. I will also write some of my own findings.

After you log in, there are some nesessery steps you have to take:
Set you view distance Recycle UAV crew
(at laptop next to base AA) if you have issues with taking control over UAV's. I don't know if it's helpful. Never used it Check what you're dealing with:
    – How many drones do you have access to in the moment? Where are those?
    – Do Grayhawks have bombs and Darters fuel?
    – What's going on? How "old" is the main AO? Is radio tower down? Are there any guys at side obj.?
When you're ready to begin, it's time to choose priorities:
    Are Grayhawks airborne and ready?
If you have no GBU's under your wings, it's time to go RTB and rearm.
Do you have Darters in place?
    If you don't you can:
    – put one down at base
    – hop on heli and set it up there in the field
My other general findings/tips about UAV's:
When you release UAV (driver) control, it will stay at an altitude you left it on until you change it's waypoint in the terminal (or take manual control, obviously). This is GREAT. You can loirier at any altitude (so don't leave your UAV too close to the ground – waypoint will be overwritten!). Safe altitude for Grayhawk:1500 with no ground AA in the area 2000 with no AA jet 2500-3000 all-green zone (I'm not sure! test it for yourself)  Getting altitude with Grayhawks: autopilot (setting waypoint) is sloooow (it will prioritize altitude over speed). Fast way is:accelerate to > 250km/h pitch up 15deg don't turn around (it will slow you down) don't be obsessed with altitude readings (ground-level altitude will jump up and down) Landing autopilot is useful (it's slow, but you can do other things in the meantime). Just remember not to keep UAV on the airstrip for too long. (sorry Luetin. I will do my best for this not happening again) On one of the salt lakes there is a secondary airstrip where you can land and rearm. Once engine stopped for rearming, point Grayhawk's gunner at attatchment points under wings. You will see if GBU's are ready from terminal. Safe altitude for Darters: 300m. My advice is to keep direct distance at > 500m out. Never set waypoint altitude for Darters. They will spin around and go nowhere. You can't repair nor refuel Darters (just send another one). I can be wrong, but wasn't working for me.  If you are taking fire don't stop maneuvering!

    Let's destroy something! Bombing:
RT (Radio Tower) is priorityIt's easy to find. (Sticks out a mile if you are in the air.) It's stationary! You should use your waypoint map marker (shift-click), so you can acquire correct laser target. Lock (Ctrl-T) directly on tower, not at it's base (foundations). At some angles Darters will create two laser targets (one at tower, another just behind. It happened to me just once) It's almost impossible to destroy moving targets on you own.If you lock, the moment you switch seats/drones laser mark will go stationary. You can ask for help, but a lot of people don't have batteries. Even if someone have batteries, they will probably loose sight of moving armor before you drop bomb. Without factoring in approach time and acquiring lock (> 20s for good pilot). if you drop bomb vertically:
    1000m → ~14s; 2000m → ~20s; 3000m → ~25s; 5000m → ~32s; 10000m → ~45s *
    * time = sqrt(2 * altitude / gravity^2), gravity in arma = 9,80665m/s^2, air resistance is not calculated, as far is I know. You will have even less time if you pitch down (since you have to take into account initial vertical part of speed vector). It's very hard, but not impossible (I guess) to drop bomb, and then switch back to lasing moving target with darter, but: approach, switching back and forth - it takes time. Armor drives fast. Never drop bombs when when pitching up. Target will look like locked, but it's not. Pitch down just a bit - drop - pitch up. You can sometimes see if bomb is locked the moment you dropped it (GBU should orient itself slightly towards target).
      Approach
Let's say you are bombing RT. You have it marked on map and designated. Your Grayhawk is @ >2000m, loitering with radius of 1500m. It will always move clockwise. I share my most reliable way to approach in attatchment. (Please remove additional one. Something is wrong with forum on my side.)

Firstly, if there is a better section for me to post this, do let me know.

Right, so we had a Zeus mission up and I was running UAV Op, I had already taken out a few targets, when suddenly 2 guys join the FSG group, and start yelling in group chat for me to leave so their friend could take over.. I explained that it's a public server and I am free to use the slot. They kept this constant noise up for around 5-10 minutes while i'm trying to be as effective as possible with the UAV's.

Now i'm not going to name drop (although I have their names saved, so I can avoid in future), but is there anything that can be done about things like this?

I know this may seem petty, but it completely ruined the immersion for me, and after dropping all bombs on targets, I left.

    Thanks

Tbh, why don't we all just hold our horses for a minute and let people submit their mod suggestions?

I know for a fact that Giddy originally wanted to AVOID using ACE, and wasn't too fond of ACRE either. Somehow this whole thing turned into "Hey, lets use all the stuff that Giddy didn't want!", and I have no idea how the bloody hell that happened.

So just, suggest some mods, try to avoid shooting down any suggestions, and eventually make a poll so we can all find out what people actually want; what there might be a market for, as it were.

    Please?
