  1. I have such idea.

Play EU 3 on operations prepared less than a week before.

Is this possible for more people?

    Edit 1:

Like a dynamic rtv system to change maps w. missions adjusting themselves to playersize, Xeno's domination style w mods for when the server is dead

  2. As much as i'd like to say that strict limitations such as what @Johnson proposed would be great, i feel like some more casual players (myself, back when i joined AWE), may enjoy dress-up warfare and a lot of different gear available. Strict limitations would result in less of those players staying, and slowly getting into the more serious game play. And while i agree that a lot of the content in the mods is left unused, players can always use that gear, while the more casual ones can stick with their loadouts.

You need to remember that AWE is most likely not going to start with 20 players playing it 24/7, therefore it may have a positive impact to allow some more lenient restrictions, hopefully resulting in more casual players from EU1 and 2, trying AWE out, additionally some casual players may be overwhelmed by more restrictions.

  3. Alright, myself and members of Steering committee have done some pretty extensive review on this.  Before getting into the results, a few initial statements on mods.

    1. The design philosophy of AWE is such that we try to limit the mods on the server to those that don't produce errors, don't unreasonably impair server / mission performance, and are reasonably recently maintained.
    2. We try to implement mods that have a relatively small size footprint to keep the repo size down.
    3. We try to implement mods that don't require a great deal of effort on our end in terms of mission optimization or server integration.
    4. If the mod passes these thresholds, we try to implement mods that increase player enjoyment for a majority of players.

Enhanced Soundscape is currently broken, with several of the sounds not working correctly on vanilla maps, as well as the mod not working at all on any modded maps. The author is aware, has confirmed the problem, but does not currently have time to fix or identify the specific issue.
Blastcore hasn't been updated since 2015, in fact, the mod's author, OpticalSnare, decided to cease further development of the mod and no one has been able to continue its development.  Arma has been updated several times since then, with more and more of Blastcore's features failing. At present, the only functionality that seems to work is the revised explosions (they are certainly pretty) but combined with the cookoff functionality in ACE, it is kind of a fps nightmare. Further, the mod produces several script errors that quickly spam your .rpt file.
Dynasound used to have an issue that if it wasn't initialized on the server, you won't hear the AI fire. We haven't confirmed whether or not this has been fixed. Of the mods, this is one that we are open to considering as an optional basis on the server, but it will require further review.

Based on these findings, we're not going to implement Enhanced Soundscape or Blastcore. We will review Dynasound, and if it requires little effort on our part to implement, and has no impact on the performance of the mission, then we will implement that as an optional mod.

    Some further notes:

On the topic of the similar experience between players, I do believe this is important, but not vital, to the experience on the server: if you know what a certain explosion means, that's all that's important, and there are a variety of ways to improve your sound quality so you might hear sounds that other players do not.  As well, if you have a beefier computer and can handle more / better / different visual effects than other players, so long as the mod didn't impair the experience for other players, I have no problems with your freedom to have this experience. But when it comes to diverting resources in terms of staff time into implementing / troubleshooting / supporting these mods, I am most definitely not interested in allocating those resources into mods which do not have a functional impact on game performance, and more importantly, I do not wish to allocate resources to troubleshooting problems related to these mods, or creating patches to implement them in our community.

And before people say "so what if there are errors, it still works fine on my game" I would caution you against that kind of thinking. Everything works fine until your .rpt file is in the hundreds of thousands of megabytes, and then you wonder why your game crashes.

So why do we allow Dynasound on EU1, you ask?  Because the public servers are distinctly unmodded, and Dynasound is designed to work explicitly with the vanilla experience. As well, the game experience of the public player tends to be more casual. But, if Dynasound started causing errors which caused I&A to stop working well, I can assure that allowance would be removed.

Feel free to continue this discussion, but that's my decision at the time being.
Just to correct, Opticalsnare stopped developing blastcore but another guy on steam workshop picked it up a month ago, and the mod is being continuously updated at the moment.

  4. I think that, if done right and coherently, TVT should be able to avoid the majority of problems that cause players to refrain from playing.
I agree completely, problem is, we have tried pretty much everything, the polls and just opinions in the community still show that people simply don't like TvT, Im really surprised myself but it was pretty much every thursday that a half of the server, or even more would quit as TvT started.

  5. You may not know, tvt nights were here, until, approximately 2 weeks ago a decision was made to stop them because most of the community didn't enjoy TvT. I myself love the idea, and I recall some really great tvt missions, the infantry but also armored warfare ones. But well, I don't think they will come back, most of arma players don't actually like PvP because of the clunkyness and desync in Arma, I don't see much of it as a problem but maybe I've just been lucky.

Thank you for defending the cause Leo and D3ATH but I think we can all say we have derailed the topic, specially that it is meant to be a guide, not a discussion of whether cluster bombs are bad for civilians. In the end were playing a game and I think we can all agree the AWE community commits war crimes quite often. Therefore I'd suggest a moderator to move those to a different topic or remove those posts, not because I disagree with them, just that I think the talk here should mostly be about the guide and it's making, not whether the usage of ammunition that the said mod offers, comes with a great moral problems. Also as cruel as it sounds, the US did not sign the cluster munition agreement, and is happily using this kind of bombs, therefore I don't see a reason to ban the usage of it on the server.

  7. Even tho the cluster ammunition convention is there, I just want to point out that many countries have the weapon in their arsenal and constantly upgrade it. And NATO coalition has quite a few times used those weapons in Iraq and Afghanistan. Specially during the first stages of operations Iraqi freedom where wild weasel F-16's were using the Cbu's to engage AAA emplacements. I've spoken with quite a lot of Wild Weasels and Cas pilots in Shephard AB, and the only weapon that coalition pilots weren't allowed to carry and use was the cluster mine dispensers.

  8. I have to agree, I have never seen anyone say no when asked to help understand/get a hang of something on AWE, even, often I see people offering to help themselves. It's just that in my stay in the community I have seen two or three people actually ask for help. I see a little more people agree to helped, but as Amentes said, very often people are simply too proud, and don't even agree to be helped / taught something.

  9. We tried that jet before. It's basically impossible to land.

Honestly, it really isn't, it just can't be slammed into the floor like some other jets.

I agree with Benjamin, a neophron is a decent middle ground.

  10. I don´t think training sessions should be needed for that. I mean yes it would be nice but all that stuff can be found on Youtube and doesnt needs a special training session...like flying.

I agree that pretty much everything can be learnt on YouTube, but following that, honestly everything that we allready have a training of can be found on YouTube, from squad leading, through flight, basic combat tactics and eod, ending at operating a mortar with nothing but ACE map tools.

  11. When Tanks or IFVs are used, they invariably end up dead very early on. It has in the past been extremely rare for a tank to not end up destroyed, leaving the infantry to deal with the remaining units that spawned in AO due to the use of a tank. This often makes for a very poor infantry experience.

Adding more Armor to an AO when tanks are in use will not fix that problem [emoji14]

Sadly I have to agree with that, quite often tanks / ifvs aren't used how they should be, sometimes because of what command want's, sometimes because of the crew. I know more than a few people I'd go hammer with, every day , it's just the player requirements and experience / proper training for players less experienced in armor. (New training idea? )

  12. LWIRCM isn't anything like flares, it means Light Weight Infrared Countermeasures - Pretty much an electro magnetic countermeasure system, i don't want to go indepth but in basic words, it pulses electromagnetic waves trying to confuse the Infared guidance system on the rockets used by MANPAD's.

Sorry to say, that's how it works. And the only thing to do, is learn how to do evasive. Quite often I survive a few missiles, it's just the matter of understanding how the Countermeasures work. Littlebird is a helicopter made for special purpose and therefore it isn't as sturdy as say blackhawk or a merlin, it's not supposed to be, it's supposed to be as light and agile as possible, it isn't supposed to be used when enemies are known to have AA coverage, flares add to the weight, and trust me, you don't want it to be heavier than it is. I am happy that we at least have the Electro Magnetic Interference Countermeasure system, as in real life only the very special purpose Mission Enhanced Littlebird have any kind of advanced countermeasures. As, well, it's not really in need of any kind, because when used according to what it was made for, in the time it takes the enemy to lock it, it will be long gone and if it was the armed variant, the enemy manpads will be gone too.

My advice, train in using the speed and agility of the helicopter in addition with LWIRCM, to evade the threat, hide behind hills, turn hard and fly faster than enemies can track you. Appear, deliver democracy and freedom and dissappear again. That's what the Mission Enhanced Littlebird was made for. Don't rely on the electro magnetic jamming to work like flares, that you can just pop flying in a straight line and hope for the best. And if a lead tells you to do something else, just inform him, that he put you in the wrong helicopter. It's not the machine that is the problem, it's just used where it shouldn't be.

  13. In making promotional material, I'd like to make a plea that the creators advertise the focus on the structured approach and the teamplay elements. Advertise ACE and TFAR, not RHS and 3CB.

Just putting that out there [emoji4]

Exactly what I've done with the billboards.

  14. As it seems that quite a few people liked the idea. I've made a few of those billboard. I am amazed by the amount of pictures that got sent to me, and i apologize i couldn't use them all, obviously only a few of the billboards are actually going to make it to public AW servers, i believe that 13 should be enough to choose from. I hope i got all the autor's of the screenshots in the description, if i didn't, send me a message and il fix it. Thanks to @IOnceWasATeddy for helping with choosing the pictures, and @SkullCollector the help with photoshop, @McKillen for constantly criticizing my work and my life choices and making up some of the phrases, everybody who sent me those pictures, and specially to @Michal for making a great one himself.

Keep in mind that im no professional, and that was probably the fifth time i actually opened Photoshop.

Ps. I sen't some staff members the link to a .rar file with the billboards etc.

I think it's about time I say something in here.

Several members of the I&A dev team (including me) have been reading this topic and i must say that we're loving what we're reading.  And we certainly are willing to put some screenshots 'advertising' AWE/EU3 in I&A.  They'd either be put on the larger billboards you can find around spawn or on the smaller ones (or both), we haven't decided on that yet.

I also have some information concerning the specs of those screenshots as arma doesn't allow us to just put any file type (etc.) on a billboard.
For starter i'd like to point out that those screenshots will have to be put in the mission file and player will have to download them.  So we'd like to have the screenshot not too big.  Also keep in mind that the billboard they'll be displayed on will not be that large so don't worry too much about low quality.  Right now our the pictures that are on the billboards are between 60 and 160 kilobytes.  Now it's not like we're going to deny any screenshot larger than 160kB but try to keep them under 300kB.
Another restriction arma puts on us is the types of files that it accepts.  Currently (as far as i know) arma will only accept .jpg, .jpeg and .paa files.  (And i'm not 100% sure about the .jpeg.)  Now .paa isn't that common of an extension (again, as far as i know :) ) but the upside is that i can convert files from .png to .paa real quick and easy.  We also prefer .paa (or .png) because arma is know to make .jpg pictures really bright.
As if this all wasn't enough yet arma restricts us even further.  It will only accept files that have a resolution that is of the form 2^x / 2^y.  So 16 / 16, 16 / 32, 64 / 256, 512 / 512, etc.  (Also, but probably not relevant, the maximum supported resolution is 4096x4096)

That's all the limitation i have for you guys.  I can personally work my way around some of them if you guys can't but i'm no photoshop wizard :)
I also cannot promise that it will be in the next I&A update but i can assure you that if it isn't in the next one it will be in the one after that.

We really appreciate what you guys are doing and we encourage you to keep doing what you're doing.

Ps: a summary for those making the picture and some other useful info:

      Hide contents

File size: preferably around 100kB, no larger than 300kB.
File type: preferably .paa or .png  But .jpg and .jpeg will also work.
    Resolution:  2^x / 2^y so 512/512 or 256/512 etc.
    Billboards have a 2:1 x/y ratio.

Example of one of the current pictures in I&A:

    pilotcaptain.png.e30a7fbffe8223a466e9b8e17b0dc9f9.png
It's a .png because the forum doesn't like .paa :)
File size: as a .png: 363 kB, as a .paa: 158 kB
    Resolution: 512x512

Thanks for the insight, that's just why i added the information. Also to everyone concerned, im resizing/cutting and compressing all the pictures sent to me, making them into png, and after into paa in TexView 2. So don't worry about struggling with that.

  16.

I still have the gauntlet file with those billboards, so if we could, we can put those back in too.

Im trying to figure out what resolution are the billboards so if anyone has an idea, let me know.

Also @Michal its lovely, il add a cheeky qr code and would work great.

  17. Hello, as some probably already know, with a few other players we have gotten an idea of placing billboards that promote AWE on Eu 1 and 2. Quite often i see players on those servers that really want more tactical realism/try to do that there. And quite often, when asked about AWE, i find out, they had no idea that it even exists or many answer something along the lines of "yea i heard about it, what is it tho?, like, I&A with 18gb of mods?".

Therefore, my idea is to make some "tacticool" billboards around the base on Eu1&2 from the great pictures that we have on the forums, promoting, and informing players of the environment AWE offers. I have spoken with a few staff members, and they seem to like the idea, next step is asking @Ryko and the rest of core staff what they think about it, but to do that, having a few billboard projects made, would be useful. I would love it if you posted your favorite pictures from AWE and your ideas of slogans that could make players consider joining, or at least, checking out the "Enhanced" community, in this topic, also, it would be great to hear everybody's ideas and opinions.

    Cheers Miczils
Ps. if you want to take it a step further and make some billboard projects, that would be damn amazing : D .
