Situation
Following our discovery of a large P.A.V.N. presence in the area our military intelligence has been searching for any and all clues as to the location and strength of enemy forces. They have just passed us some intel on the location of the P.A.V.N. forces main garrison, their staging point as well as their resupply point. We with the help of A.R.V.N. forces will be attacking all 3 positions in an early morning raid which if successful will deal a major blow to the enemy in this area. We must however complete all 3 tasks together or risk enough of the enemy escaping to allow them to reform. Our task will be to assault the enemies main barracks centred around the village of Long Duc and their supply port in Vung Tau. The A.R.V.N. will be assaulting Phu Vinh. The have the man power to complete the job but lack any real air assets. We will have to be available to aid them, by way of air power, in case of a counter attack or if they lose momentum.

Mission
 
Insert by helo into the AO, assault both targets (attack order is at commanders discretion). Provide air support to A.R.V.N. if requested. Destroy the P.A.V.N.s 
 
 
Execution
 
Objectives:
Insert by helicopter
Assault Long Duc, the P.A.V.N. assembly area, to disrupt the organisation of their forces
Assault Vung Tau, the P.A.V.N. supply port, to cut off their source of resupply
Capture any enemy documents which are available
Extract once objectives are complete
 
Movement Plan:
At Commanders discretion
 
Rules of Engagement:
Armed personnel may be engaged on sight.
Civilians are present in the area so collateral damage is to be kept to a minimum.
Only buildings clearly being used for a military purpose may be engaged.
Civilian life must be protected (Hearts and minds)
 
Optional Tasks:
Provide air assistance to the ARVN forces in the village of Phu Vinh when required/requested.

Resupply:
At the commander’s control, assets are available at base to facilitate this.

Command:
Overall command lays with codename "Overlord" who will set objectives and ROE.
Operational control on the ground lies with the Platoon Commander.
 
Communication:
Radio channels are set for each element and can be viewed on the map in game. Platoon has limited discretion for change but structure is to be maintained.

Introduction Political fiction inbound
            The island of Altis has a history full of violence, as does the rest of the Altis Archipelago. During the Cold War, Altis fell into Soviet sphere of influence, which was welcomed by some of its people and resented by others. A short lived insurgency against the communist rule was quickly ended, not without help from Soviet troops. With the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991, Altis regained some of its lost freedom, but it would not be an end to unrest on the island. In fact, it would only get worse.
            The original government decided to keep close bonds with Russia, but it quickly became apparent that the government has no way of remaining in power. Over the years Altis would gradually drift away from Russia and towards NATO, as its external politics stabilized. Nothing stabilized internally, however. Since 1991 Altis experienced multiple snap elections, political assassinations, mass shootings and two attempted coups. "Altian clock" - originally a comedic gag inspired by "the doomsday clock" - is counting down time to Altis descending into chaos, and people look at it with concern. The unrest on the island made for fertile ground in which to plant dangerous ideas. Ideas that are poison to the society, ideas that can only result in more violence. And with recent geological surveys suggesting presence of uranium on the island, Russia once more turns it's gaze towards Altis, which - one could say - "rightfully" belonged to them.
            Now Altis is on the brink of civil war. Rebellion has taken root on the island. The rebels were swayed by the poisonous words of the anarchists to take up arms against the government. It is almost certain that they are backed by the international organization, who call themselves "Freedom" - a large group regarded by most countries as terrorists, anarchists. Freedom fights to overthrow all governments, all systems of justice, all that which in their view limits the freedom of an individual. There is no proof of their involvement on Altis, but the rebellion seems to share their viewpoint, and it is certain that they are funded by an external power - most likely Freedom, but suspicion also falls on Russia.
            Situation on the island is likely to worsen, as Altian Army struggles to deal with the insurgency. The government tries to seek help abroad. The corporate-funded mercenary group "Gatekeeper" refused cooperation, as it seems Russia offered them a much better contract to avoid their involvement with Altian government. The international task force "Epsilon" operating under NATO banner and dedicated to counteracting global terrorism threats refused involvement for now, uncertain of the situation on Altis. The only hope of bringing them into the fray is to find definite proof of Freedom's involvement. USA and UK agreed to send equipment to support the Altian army, as well as a token military force, which is yet to arrive. The only open offer of "help" came from Russia, but the government was forced to reject it. Despite that, the Russian military is clearly on the move, as the bear is sensing an opportunity.  This caused concern in NATO and so the scene is set...
            With NATO and Russian forces approaching the island in turmoil and a terrorist organization seemingly acting from behind the scenes, it seems all ingredients for a disaster have been added to the cauldron. It is only a matter of time before it starts to boil.
            The Altian clock shows two minutes to midnight...
 

 
The assets
Player faction: Altian military
Player slots: 32
- PLATCO - 4-man command element and armored command vehicle
- 3 Infantry Squads - Alpha, Bravo, Charlie - 8-man each (4-man fireteam, 3-man maneuver team + engineer - effectively two 4-man fireteams)
- Deimos - BMP-1P IFV - 2-man crew (Gunner/commander and driver)
- Support team - 2-man team equipped with either an HMG or recoilless rifle, at commander's discretion
- Various wheeled transport vehicles

There will be no arsenal, players are given custom loadouts. Resupply will be possible.
Despite using a mix of western and russian weaponry, squad layouts are organised so that there should always be someone who uses the same ammo type.
 
 
The mission
The goal is to put an end to insurgent activity in the area. The rebels have attacked the town of Abdera, most likely to retaliate against the civilians loyal to the government. We are also expecting the insurgents to have several camps, outposts or weapon caches in the area. We must retake the town, and find and neutralize any insurgent threat in it's vicinity. Safety of civilians is a priority. Securing intel or capturing insurgents for interrogation could also prove beneficial to our efforts. We should also be ready to counter any insurgent movements in response to our actions and be on the lookout for possible proof of Freedom's involvement in the insurgency.

Just a prologue?
If people like it and want more, this will likely evolve into a zeus campaign, with a player-driven story and future missions influenced by your efforts, successes and failures. You will get the opportunity to play as Altians, Americans and British and face unique enemy commanders with personalized command styles. It will aim to be the best possible mixture of fun, immersive and challenging.
 

Hey All,
 
The EU2 Vietnam Friday missions will be taking a break until the 10th January 2020.
 
This week I am snowed under in work, next week is Christmas and the week after I have an exam on the Saturday, so I really should spend the Friday studying.
 
Following this break, we will return for the final mission of the Air Cavalry deployment and then we will move on to a more conventional infantry force, modelled after the 1st Infantry Division using armoured vehicles and such. This will allow us to do missions which didn't fit right with the Air cavalry ethos.

What a difference a year makes, this time last year we were looking at closing shops and now I would say we are pretty stable for at least another year

I would like to apologies on the delay of IA4 and its new AWE counterpart, it has taken a lot longer than we had anticipated due to a number of reasons. (real life) Hopefully it wont be too long now.
 
Lastly, This will be my last update, I have decided that I will call it time come the end of this month and step down from the staff team completely.

Situation
You are part of a NATO SF task force that specialise in working behind enemy lines for the purpose of dismantling terror cells before they can strike. While on our long awaited leave in the Mediterranean we were ordered to report to a local NATO base. Military Intelligence has found evidence that an infamous terror cell and their leader are located somewhere on the island of Malden. This cell was responsible for several recent chemical weapons attacks. We will airdrop in, dismantle their operation and attempt to capture their leader. Command is scrambling to get us the gear we need as our normal kit is stored at our assigned base and is unlikely to arrive before the operation starts.

Hi folks,
 
I recognize that a lot of the development work on IA4 is kind of done in a black void, so I thought I'd share some data on optimization generated over last Friday's beta test.
 

 
This graph shows server performance per minute, relative to the number of players connected and the number of AI units present in the mission.  If you played on Friday you noticed that performance really began to tank at around the two hour mark.  Your first instinct might be to think, "well, the mission's been running for 2 hours, there's probably a lot of clutter, lots of units running around, it's probably making the mission slower".  But in fact, that's not the case.  The key metric that's slowing down the mission...?  The number of players connected!
 
Arma's actually quite efficient when it comes to running units, the trouble is when you have a mission that is running any kind of custom script (as both 3 and 4 do) in order to manage how the mission plays, and to give any special instructions to the AI units.  In the case of 4, there's one special script called opforAwarenessDaemon, whose sole purpose is to give instructions to patrolling AI units based on their knowledge of player units.  Put another way: if you're shooting at the AI, the script will let the AI respond to your shots rather than just sit there and take it.  It'll have them change their patrol path, call in support from other units, or even call in air support.
 
Here's another version of the chart that's a bit easier to read when it comes to player count / FPS;

What we're seeing in the graph is that when the player count is below 30 players, everything is working fairly well - average server FPS (the green line) hovers between 20-47 FPS, which is excellent.  And it's doing so whether the number of AI is low or high. But when we get over 30 players, server performance tanks quickly (see the chart between the 100 and 150 minutes mark).  This is because with more players, there are more enemy units, and they're taking longer to do their opforAwareness check.  And since Arma's internal design philosophy is that if the program can't complete a script in a certain amount of time, it gets bumped to the next cycle, which just pushes the problem further down the line... until eventually the program crashes.
 
(the spikes, if you're wondering, are generally when new AOs are spawning and a bunch of new AI units are populated.)
 
So, how does one address this?
 
1. Less AI units?  IA4 scales the number of enemy units to the number of players, so that there are plenty of targets for the players to engage and make the mission fun.  If I reduce the number of units, I'll hear more feedback of "I just got the AO and it ended".  And since on its own, Arma is pretty efficient at running units, that's not the preferred option.
2. Optimize opforAwarenessDaemon?  Definitely the preferred direction.  Data like this helps me identify methods for improving the efficiency of the code in question.  In the script there are a few factors to be decided in figuring out what targets the enemy AI units will prioritize, as I've laid out in this decision tree: to summarize, every 20 seconds, an enemy group leader will assess their known targets, and decide whether one of them is a threat worth leaving their patrol route to attack.

There are certainly things I do (ie., corners I can cut) which give similar results to what I'm looking for, that are more efficient in doing so. But the long and the short of it is the same.  If there are more players to assess, and more enemy groups to do the assessing, then that's more work being performed by the server.
 
3. Cut opforAwarenessDaemon?  It has to be a consideration; while the intent of IA4 is to create a more intelligent mission, if the performance requirements to do so exceed the playability of the mission, then it's just not worth it to pursue, and maybe it'll have to go back on the shelf and await a more capable engine (Arma 4, here we come?).
 
So that's a look at how the sausage gets made - if you have comments or suggestions, I'm always happen to discuss.
