In Operation Steamroller, the players form a small US Army mechanized infantry platoon, tasked to secure the towns of Agios Dionysius and Kavala.  Russian forces have secured multiple beach landings to the west, but if the US can get to Kavala first, they can set up a defence to prevent the town from being taken.

Zeus will be on hand to make it entertaining, but not impossible: the Americans have the advantage of speed, but not numbers, so expect a lot of enemy armor.

If you're interested in leading the Platoon, or one of the two six-man infantry squads, I'll be releasing the map overview in this thread on Wednesday July 6, so command can create a plan in advance, and we can get rolling sooner on the day.

Any questions, put 'em in this thread.

OPERATION STEAMROLLER - MISSION BRIEFING

Date: June 24, 1998
Time: 0415 (dawn)
Map: Altis

SUMMARY

Russian VDV have commenced a surprise invasion of Altis. US forces in the area are sparse: your unit is the only one capable of rapid response. Fortunately satellite surveillance shows the Russians are making slow progress mobilizing their armored units from their staging points; if your unit can move swiftly enough, you can beat them to their objective of Kavala, form a defensive perimeter, and fend off the invasion long enough for US air cover to arrive.

SITUATION

Your unit is stationed at the military base at coordinates 128166.  A large armored force of Russian has deployed without resistance on the southwest coast of Altis, near Kavala.  NATO intelligence suggest they will take Kavala to use as a staging point, as they advance further inland.

MISSION

Russian units have deployed from sea landing carriers at 038148 and 045101. Your mechanized infantry unit is tasked with getting to Kavala before the Russians do, and setting up a defensive perimeter. The Russians have already sent several recon squads inland and have established a light presence at Agios Dionysios.

OBJECTIVES

1) AGIOS DIONYSIOS

You may choose to engage forces at Agios Dionysios or bypass the town completely, but be aware that leaving the town alone may result in the Russians calling in those units when you attack Kavala.

Estimated OPFOR: Russian Recon squads, light armor (APCs & IFVs)

2) KAVALA

The primary objective: the Russians hold three key points that must be secured.

OBJECTIVE 1) SECURE GOVERNMENT OFFICE BUILDING

This building contains controls for the power grid in the city.  The Russians are using it as a command and control center.

OBJECTIVE 2) SECURE HOSPITAL

The hospital is being used as a secondary command and control center, as well as a medical facility.

OBJECTIVE 3) DESTROY RADAR EMPLACEMENT

The Russians have set up a Radar emplacement in Kavala castle: so long as it is operational, the Russians will be able to track and respond to any air cover we can provide. Of the three objectives in Kavala, consider it your most important.

Estimated OPFOR: Russian EMF VDV squads, light armor.

Additionally, Russian armor units are being landed at points 038148 and 045101. While the Russians seem to be having difficulty getting these units mobilized on a timely basis, you can expect that they will send out whatever units are operational in order to engage you.

3) DEFEND KAVALA

Once the city objectives are secured, you are to establish a defensive perimeter in the city to ensure these three objectives are not captured by Russian forces.

REINFORCEMENTS

The USS Khe Sanh is en route and should be able to provide F/A-18 fighter jets for air cover by 0600. Additionally a supply box containing emplacements is available for deployment in your base.

CIVILIAN POPULATION

We are operating on the good graces of the government of Altis, and there exists a sizeable civilian population throughout the area. Civilian casualties, and the destruction of civilian property, must be avoided where ever possible.
