Greyhawk Spawn time

Mirage

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I recently found myself playing as the UAV Operator quite often, it's quite fun to be able to support the ground units by taking out high threat armored targets or large groups of hostile units.

However despite applying all the techniques from guides and the FAQ, the greyhawk is stilly pretty prone to blow up for no good reason, as has been the case for years now.

Cycling the crew, killing yourself, connecting to gunner, waiting etc, or allowing the AI to get going on it's own did reduce the amount of times it blew up, but the problem still persists.

This, combined with the fragile nature of the Greyhawk, constant threat of enemy jets at base, in the air and an abundance of AA at the AO means that the vast majority of time there is no Greyhawk up in the air, and you spend your time trying to awkwardly provide intel with the Darter, cross referencing with the map since the UAV Terminal does not show players on the map either.

Not to mention the tendency for it not to listen when there are targets around.

All in all I find the UAV operator to be a rather frustrating job at times.

The UGV not really being a valuable asset since it's a wheeled vehicle instead of a tracked vehicle, so it's very easily disabled by gunfire, once it arrives at the AO after a long 60km/h drive.

Considering the blowing up of Greyhawks has been an issue for years now, I don't expect a fix for that, but I was wondering if the spawntime of the Greyhawk could be reduced so it becomes a more enjoyable and worthwhile job.

Possibly increasing the rearm and repair time, or only leaving only a single Greyhawk if it were to become OP because of this.

I would love to hear other opinions or suggestions on the matter, why you agree or disagree with this.

Thanks.

As far as I am aware, the guide at the very bottom of this post, by Amentes, gives an almost 100% success rate when starting the greyhawks, or at least it has with me: http://www.ahoyworld.co.uk/topic/3140-how-to-use-the-uavs-basic-and-in-depth-guide/.

It did really reduce the amount of times it blew up for me, but there still seems to be a luck factor involved where it blows up even though you did the exact same thing as before, when one of the greyhawks got out just fine but the other one blew up, doing the exact same thing.

I see, I have found that nudging the greyhawks has meant that they almost never explode although there do still seem to be some problems.

In terms of the respawn time I believe this is to avoid making the greyhawks too powerful as this is a game focussed on infantry fighting, which is also why any other aircraft with air to ground weapons are rewards, as this means that the AO is not simply cleared out by aircraft before the infantry can even get there.

Maybe it's because I play on EU 1, which means I have to laser targets myself, so you're dependant on the Darters or Remote designators which you have to bring yourself, this severely increases the time it takes to get anything done.

I usually get the RT down but that's about it, by no means am I able to take down the entire AO, but maybe that's just me.

It is possible to both lase and drop bombs with the same greyhawk, which makes them far more effective on EU1. Honestly I am only speculating as to why the respawn time is so long, but the same reason was given for not adding in armed aircraft other than as rewards so I assume it is for the same reason, only a staff member could give you the proper answer.

I have played on I&A servers with multiple armed helicopters and jets, and that does take away from the experience when they annihilate all the vehicles at the AO instantly, but i don't think that the Greyhawk is capable of effectively doing that on it's own.

But that is why I suggested the increased rearm time or reducing it to a single Greyhawk to balance out, not that I really feel that it will be overpowered but in case that would happen,.. I personally just really dislike the amount of time you spend waiting for the respawn, but if it´s possible to never have them explode as you say, I might need to figure it out myself I guess.

Here is the quote about how to start the greyhawks without explosion just in case you missed it. All credit goes to Amentes, this is his work not mine:

"2.81 UAV procedure:

1) Ensure the landing gear isn't clipping the ground:

Take Stomper

Drive up behind the Greyhawk you wanna fly

Bump it a little bit

2) Start-up:

Open UAV Terminal

Select the bumped Greyhawk

Place Waypoint 1km+ away from Greyhawk

Take GUNNER position

Observe engine startup

3a) Engine start-up:

Await UAV movement

Take control of Driver immediately once it moves on its own

If it parks itself into a wall, use your Stomper to push it

3b) Engine fails to start after a minute of waiting:

Take control of Driver

Best of luck!

4) Take-off

Flaps down full

Taxi to runway

Apply speed until it lifts off on its own"

I hope it helps!
